On Android, manage Gemini’s access in three separate places: the Google app’s Android permissions, Gemini’s Connected Apps settings, and Gemini Apps Activity. Changing one does not replace the others. For example, revoking Contacts permission limits access to device contacts, while disconnecting a service controls an integration and turning off Keep Activity changes how Gemini activity is saved.
Which Gemini privacy setting should you change?
Choose the control that matches what you want to limit. Android permission paths and labels can vary by device and Android version; Google’s instructions below primarily cover personal accounts. Work and school accounts may have settings controlled by a Workspace administrator.

How do you stop Gemini from accessing contacts on Android?
- Open Android Settings and go to Apps > Google > Permissions. Alternatively, touch and hold the Google app, tap App info, then tap Permissions.
- Tap Contacts and select Don’t allow to revoke the Google app’s access to device contacts. The exact labels may differ by manufacturer or Android version.
- Review Gemini’s Connected Apps settings as well. Contacts may be available through device permission, a device-contact setting, or an eligible Personal Intelligence connection; these are separate controls.
Gemini is hosted by the Google app on Android, even if you have installed the Gemini app. Google says Contacts permission can help Gemini call or message device contacts that are not synced to your Google Account. Revoking it may therefore make some contact matching or contact-based actions unavailable.

Check device-contact settings separately
Gemini has a setting described as “Contact info from your devices” or “Save contact info from your signed-in devices.” Google says this can make device contacts easier to interact with across Google services. Check Gemini or account settings for this option if you also want to limit that use.

Personal Intelligence is another separate connection
Google’s current Personal Intelligence help page says its Contacts connection can include Google Contacts and contact information from a signed-in device. The page lists eligibility as US-only, English-only, and AI Ultra. Availability can change and may differ by account, so do not assume this connection is available to every user.
How do you turn off Gemini’s access to calls and messages?
Use Android permissions to restrict device-level access, and Connected Apps to disconnect a listed integration. For calls, Google says Phone permission is required; Contacts and Call Logs are optional aids that can improve contact matching. For SMS, Google says the Google app needs SMS permission, while Contacts access can help reach people who are not synced to the Google Account.

Revoke Phone, Call Logs, or SMS permission
- Open Android Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions. You can also touch and hold the Google app, choose App info, and open Permissions.
- Choose Phone, Call Logs, or SMS, depending on what you want to restrict, then select Don’t allow where that permission is listed.
- Test the task you care about. Calling may stop working without Phone permission; messaging may stop working without SMS permission. Revoking Contacts or Call Logs can reduce contact matching or other optional assistance.
Google’s call help gives examples such as “Can you call them?” and “Call [contact full name].” These illustrate supported task wording; they are not a guarantee that every device or account has the same integration.

- Open Gemini and go to Settings & help (or Settings) > Connected Apps. In Gemini on the web, Google documents Settings > Connected Apps. Some users may see Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps first.
- Find the service you want to disconnect and switch it off.
- Check the service’s listed actions to understand what the connection covers. Available services vary by app, device, country, language, and account.
Android Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Device assistance may be available even when Keep Activity is off. Therefore, turning off Keep Activity is not a substitute for disconnecting a service or changing Android permissions.

How do you limit saved Gemini activity?
Gemini Apps Activity controls saved Gemini conversations and activity, rather than Android permissions. Open Gemini Apps Activity in My Activity to review or delete items, select a date range, or turn Keep Activity off. Google also documents activity-management paths in the Gemini app menus, though labels can vary.
Turn Keep Activity off or delete items
- To remove selected history, delete individual items or choose a date range in Gemini Apps Activity.
- To stop saving activity in the usual way, turn Keep Activity off in the activity controls.
- For personal accounts, Google lists auto-delete periods of 3, 18, or 36 months, with 18 months as the default. Work and school account retention may instead be governed by a Workspace administrator.
Turning Keep Activity off does not mean that no conversation data is temporarily retained. Google says conversations may be kept for up to 72 hours for service delivery and feedback processing, even when they do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says that, for users who previously used Google Assistant for calls or messages, up to 90 days of saved Assistant communications request history may be imported from Web & App Activity into Gemini Apps Activity. This is a possible upper limit, not a statement that every user has imported history.

What data can Gemini process when it calls or sends a message?
Google says that when Connected Apps help Gemini make calls or send messages, Gemini mobile apps process Gemini Apps Activity (if available), device calling and messaging logs, contact information, and device information and settings. Google says this information is used to select a useful app and connect the user with the right person. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub states: “Messages that you create and send with the Gemini app are not end-to-end-encrypted by Google.”

What happens when you disconnect an app or delete activity?
- Disconnecting a Connected App or deleting data inside that connected app does not delete Gemini Apps Activity.
- Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete information another app already received from Gemini. That app handles retained data under its own policies.
- Google warns that changes to connected apps may take days to affect the Gemini experience in some cases.
These distinctions matter if you want to limit future access, clear Gemini’s saved activity, or remove data held by another service: they are different actions, and one does not guarantee the others.

What changes on the web, iPhone, or a work account?
The Android steps above apply to device permissions such as Phone, SMS, and Contacts. On the web, Google documents Connected Apps under Settings > Connected Apps and provides the Gemini Apps Activity shortcut linked above. iOS and web do not have the same Android app-permission controls, and feature availability is not identical across platforms.
Connected Apps, menus, and available services can vary by device, platform, account, country, and language. Google’s cited guidance primarily covers personal accounts. If you use Gemini with a work or school account, check with your Workspace administrator about activity retention and other account-managed controls.
