If your USB-C device is charging slowly, the connector shape alone does not tell you whether the charger and cable support its fast-charging requirements. Check the exact device model, simplify the charging setup, then test a compatible cable and adapter one at a time. Heat, battery settings, a dirty or damaged port, and shared charger output can also reduce charging speed.
Why a USB-C charger may charge slowly
USB-C describes a connector, not a universal charging speed. A device, adapter, and cable must work together using charging standards the device supports. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for your exact model rather than choosing a charger by connector or its largest printed wattage. Apple specifies USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) adapters for supported iPhone fast charging, while Google lists compatible adapter types for Pixel and cautions that other accessories may not work as expected. Apple’s iPhone fast-charge guidance and Google’s Pixel charging guidance explain their respective requirements.
The cable matters, too. Google says a USB-A-to-USB-C setup charges a Pixel more slowly than a USB-C adapter with a USB-C cable; a damaged or unsupported cable can cause very slow charging or prevent charging. An adapter’s maximum rating is not necessarily what your device receives: devices negotiate power within their supported limits, and a multi-port charger may share or prioritize its output.
Temperature and battery management can lower charging speed. Apple says fast charging may not work in excessive heat or cold, and Google says some Pixel phones adjust charging to manage device and battery temperatures. On some Samsung Galaxy models, a charging setting or Battery protection mode can affect fast charging or the apparent charge limit.

Troubleshoot the charger, cable, and device
1. Confirm what your model supports
Find the exact device model and check its manufacturer’s charging guidance for the supported protocol, adapter requirements, and cable type. Requirements can vary even between generations from the same manufacturer. For example, Apple’s published guidance gives different adapter requirements by iPhone model generation, while Google lists USB-PD adapters rated at 15 W or more and PPS adapters rated at 30 W or more for Pixel charging. Those are Google’s compatibility recommendations, not a claim that every Pixel supports the same charging rate; supported speed depends on the model. See Apple’s guidance and Google’s guidance.
2. Test a simple, direct connection
- Plug one charger directly into a wall outlet.
- Connect the device with one cable; remove any hub or dock from the path.
- If the adapter has multiple ports, disconnect other devices and check whether charging improves.
Shared output can matter. Google says its Pixel Flex dual-port charger can provide up to 67 W from one port when one device is connected, and up to 60 W per port with two devices connected; it also says the charger prioritizes Pixel devices, which can leave less output available for another connected device. These figures describe that specific charger, not multi-port adapters in general. Google’s Pixel Flex charger information describes its output.

Works with any USB-C device.
3. Swap one accessory at a time
Try a known-good cable that meets your device’s requirements, then try a compatible adapter. Change only one component at a time so you can tell which item affects charging. If a replacement restores fast charging, the original cable or adapter may be damaged or incompatible; replace only the suspect item and match its protocol and ratings to the device. A higher advertised wattage alone does not establish compatibility.
For supported iPhone fast charging, Apple calls for a USB-C cable and compatible USB-C PD adapter. Google distinguishes USB-C-to-USB-C from USB-A-to-USB-C Pixel setups. The two manufacturers’ requirements are model-specific, so use the guidance for your device: Apple and Google.

4. Reduce heat and power use while comparing
If the device feels unusually hot or cold, let it return to a moderate temperature before testing again. Close demanding apps or leave the screen off during the comparison so the device is not using substantial power while charging. This can help identify whether temperature or active use is contributing, but it does not guarantee a particular charging time. Apple notes that excessive heat or cold can prevent fast charging; Google says some Pixel phones adjust charging to manage temperature. Apple and Google describe these behaviors.
5. Review charging settings on Samsung Galaxy
On Galaxy devices that expose the option, open Settings > Battery > Charging settings and check that Fast charging is enabled. Review Battery protection if the device stops at a charge limit. Samsung notes that menu names and layouts vary by model and software version, and that a PC or standard USB device may not provide fast charging. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.

6. Inspect the port safely
Turn off the device and use a light to look for visible debris. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions; Samsung advises against using metal objects or liquids to remove debris. If a moisture warning appears, stop connecting the charger until the port and cable are dry and the warning clears. Do not use hardware that appears burned, melted, or corroded. Google specifically advises stopping use of a cable if its port appears burned, melted, or corroded; see Google’s cable and charging safety guidance and Samsung’s port guidance.

If charging remains slow with known-good, model-compatible accessories—or the connector is loose or damaged, a moisture warning keeps returning, or equipment becomes unusually hot—contact the device manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Samsung recommends service inspection when swapping compatible charging equipment does not resolve the issue. Samsung Support lists troubleshooting factors and service guidance.
What charging-speed claims do—and don’t—tell you
Manufacturer figures are conditional, not universal promises. Apple says supported iPhone 8 or later models can reach up to 50% battery in around 30 minutes with the listed fast-charge setup. Apple’s page, published April 2, 2026, identifies testing in January 2026 for iPhone 17e, July 2025 for the iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air, and August 2024 for the iPhone 16 family; Apple says charging times vary with settings and environmental factors. This claim does not establish the expected speed for another device, charger, cable, or situation. See Apple’s test notes and conditions.
