These steps reduce human-caused pressures; no single neighborhood project can guarantee that a species will avoid extinction. Preventing extinctions also depends on habitat protection and conservation action at broader scales.
Why local action matters—and what it can accomplish
North America has lost an estimated three billion birds since the 1970s, according to the National Audubon Society in 2019. That figure describes a decline in bird populations, not three billion species going extinct. The sources cited here do not quantify how many extinctions a particular community project prevents, but they identify practical ways to reduce risks birds face where people live and work.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Urban Bird Treaty Program Guidebook describes a useful three-part approach: reach people, enable individual and community action, and work toward lasting system change through collaboration. In practice, that means starting with changes at home, coordinating improvements in shared places, and supporting policies that protect birds over time.
Start with changes at home
Plant habitat suited to your region
Replace some lawn or pavement with native trees, shrubs, grasses, or wildflowers suited to your local region. Native plants can provide birds with food and shelter, but the right species depend on where you live. Audubon offers a regional native-plant database to help identify options.

For a yard or balcony, choose plants appropriate to the available space and conditions. Before planting in a park or other public space, coordinate with the land manager so the project fits the site and its maintenance plan.
Make glass visible to birds
Birds may collide with windows when glass reflects nearby habitat or appears to offer a clear passage through a building. Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends visible treatments such as exterior screens or window treatments, including film. See its guidance on preventing window collisions.

If you use a film or other treatment, follow its instructions and place it where it makes the glass visible from outside. Do not assume one isolated decal or a few widely spaced markings will make a whole window safe. For shared buildings, residents can ask owners to consider effective treatments or safer glazing.
Keep pet cats indoors or securely contained
Keep pet cats indoors, or provide outdoor access in a secure enclosure. Cornell Lab summarizes estimates that cats kill between 1.3 billion and 4 billion birds annually in the United States. This is a broad range of estimates, not an exact annual count; the Cornell Lab FAQ on outdoor cats explains the issue.

Use pesticides sparingly
Avoid routine pesticide use where possible, and look for safer, targeted approaches when a pest problem needs attention. The Fish and Wildlife Service’s guidebook includes avoiding pesticides among beneficial actions. Reducing unnecessary use can also help protect the food web birds depend on.
Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights
Encourage household members to switch off exterior lights that are not needed, especially during migration periods. Residents can also ask businesses to reduce unnecessary lighting and support local lights-out efforts. Balance these requests with genuine safety needs and applicable local policy; recommendations and migration timing vary by place.

- BUILT FOR SMALL SONGBIRDS — AND IT KEEPS THE BIG ONES OUT: Six small ports with 1.4" perches are sized for finches, chickadees, sparrows and nuthatches. Larger birds like blue jays, grackles and cardinals can't get a grip, so they stop raiding the tube and flinging the small seed on the ground to get at the big kernels. If you want cardinals or woodpeckers too, pair this with a platform or hopper feeder — this one is deliberately the small-bird station.
- WIDE LIFT-TOP + SEE-THROUGH TUBE — REFILL IN SECONDS: Lift the metal lid straight up and pour; the opening is wide enough that you are not funnelling seed through a narrow neck. The clear tube shows the level from across the yard, so you refill before it runs empty instead of checking by opening it. Holds 1.5lb of sunflower, safflower or mixed seed — a small tube on purpose: seed gets eaten before it can sit and go stale.
- HOW TO CLEAN IT: The lid lifts off and the tube is clear, so you can see exactly what needs cleaning. The base is fixed — not removable — so here is what works: tip the feeder upside down and tap to empty packed seed, run a bottle brush or pipe cleaner in through the ports, rinse, then stand it upside down until fully dry before refilling. Do this every 2-3 refills and after any spell of wet weather, so damp seed never sits at the bottom.
- METAL LID, BASE AND PORTS: The lid, base, perches and all six port surrounds are metal, so beaks and claws land on metal rather than thin plastic; the seed tube itself is clear polycarbonate, which is what lets you see the level. Note: this is not a squirrel-proof feeder — the ports are open and a determined squirrel can reach seed. If squirrels are a problem in your yard, hang it from a pole with a baffle, which is what owners who have no squirrel trouble do.
- HANG IT WHERE YOU CAN WATCH — POLE, BRANCH OR SHEPHERD'S HOOK (POLE NOT INCLUDED): The metal hanger fits a standard shepherd's hook, deck pole or tree branch. Most owners hang it within sight of a kitchen or living-room window — finches find a new feeder within days, and you get the show from inside. Works all four seasons, with the busiest months being late autumn and winter when wild food runs short. A ready gift for a parent, grandparent or anyone who watches birds.
Turn individual steps into community projects
Shared spaces can make a neighborhood-wide difference, but they require coordination with the people who own or manage them. The Fish and Wildlife Service guidebook identifies both individual actions and collaborative, long-term community change as parts of bird conservation.
- Schools and parks: Ask administrators or land managers about native planting projects and safer windows on buildings.
- Businesses and property owners: Encourage visible window treatments and reduced unnecessary exterior lighting.
- Neighborhood groups: Organize planting, habitat care, or lights-out efforts, and agree on who will maintain a project after installation.
- Local government: Build partnerships with city and county leaders to support bird-safe building and lighting standards, habitat protection, and limits on harmful pesticide use.
For new plantings or building changes in shared places, involve the relevant land manager or owner before work begins. This helps ensure the proposed action suits the site and can be maintained.

Choose an action that fits your capacity
| Action | Primary pressure addressed | Who can put it in place | Coordination and lasting impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native planting | Loss of useful food and shelter | Residents, schools, parks, property owners | Plant choice depends on region and site; shared projects need land-manager approval and ongoing care. |
| Visible window treatments or safer glazing | Bird collisions with glass | Residents, building owners, local governments | A household can treat its own windows; wider change may require building-wide work or standards. |
| Cat containment | Bird mortality caused by outdoor pet cats | Cat owners | Can begin at home; secure outdoor access requires an enclosure. |
| Reduced pesticide use | Exposure to harmful chemicals and effects on the food web | Residents, groundskeepers, businesses, local governments | Individuals can change household practices; broader limits require institutional or policy action. |
| Reduced unnecessary lighting | Risks associated with nighttime lighting during migration | Residents, businesses, building owners, local governments | Switching off unneeded lights is a direct step; community lights-out efforts require coordination and attention to safety. |
Support monitoring and durable protection
Community science and conservation volunteering can contribute observations and hands-on support to broader efforts. Audubon’s 22 actions for birds includes volunteering, community science, and writing to policymakers. Share observations responsibly, follow the instructions of the project you join, and contact local decision-makers about habitat protection and bird-safe practices.
Individual projects address particular pressures; they are not a substitute for protecting species and habitats at larger scales. Long-term progress is more likely when residents, conservation organizations, land managers, businesses, and local leaders keep working together.
