To check a Bitcoin transaction, copy its transaction ID (txid) from your wallet, search for it in a Bitcoin block explorer, then review its status, confirmations, outputs, and fee. An unconfirmed result means the transaction has not yet been included in a block; it does not by itself mean the payment failed.
Find the transaction ID in your wallet
- Open your wallet and find the relevant sent or received transaction in its history.
- Open the transaction details and look for “transaction ID,” “txid,” or a copy option. Some wallets also provide a direct link to a block explorer.
- Copy the complete txid. It is a unique 64-character string, as described in Blockstream’s transaction lookup guide.
Search a Bitcoin block explorer
- Open a public explorer such as Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space.
- Paste the txid into the search field and open the matching result. If the service offers multiple networks, make sure you are viewing Bitcoin rather than another network.
Blockstream says its explorer is free and does not require an account. Explorer interfaces can change, so use the txid search rather than relying on a particular button label.
Read the transaction’s status and confirmations
Unconfirmed
An unconfirmed transaction has not been recorded in a block. It may be waiting in a node’s mempool, the set of transactions that node has received but that have not yet been included in the blockchain. This status alone does not establish that a payment failed.
Confirmed
A transaction gets its first confirmation when a miner includes it in a block. Each subsequent block built on top of that block adds another confirmation. The explorer should show the associated block and a confirmation count for a confirmed transaction. Blockstream describes around six confirmations as a common threshold for treating a payment as final, not a guarantee or universal rule. The appropriate threshold can depend on the payment and the parties involved.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Check the amount, destination, and fee
- Outputs: Verify the output that corresponds to the payment, including its amount and destination. A transaction can have more than one output; one may return change to the sender.
- Inputs: These show the coins being spent to fund the transaction. They may not correspond to a single earlier payment because Bitcoin transactions can combine inputs.
- Fee: Review the total fee and, where shown, the fee rate. Fee rates are commonly expressed in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB).
Use the destination and amount to identify the payment you intended to make; do not assume every output is a payment to someone else, since change may go back to your wallet. Blockstream’s guides explain how Bitcoin transactions are created and broadcast.
If the transaction is pending or missing
The explorer shows “unconfirmed”
Miners generally prioritize transactions with higher fee rates, but the displayed fee rate is not a promise of when this transaction will confirm. Mempools are maintained by individual nodes, so their pending-transaction views can differ. As a result, an unconfirmed transaction may appear on one explorer and not another.

The txid is not found
- Check that you copied the entire txid correctly, without omitting or adding characters.
- Confirm that the explorer is set to the intended Bitcoin network.
- Try another public explorer. A transaction that is pending may not appear in every explorer’s mempool view.
- Check the wallet’s transaction details and current chain data before drawing a conclusion. A missing result alone does not identify what happened.
These checks address common possibilities, but a missing result does not have a single explanation in every case.
A pending transaction disappears
Depending on the node’s policies and what happens on the network, a pending transaction may be included in a block, be displaced when a conflicting transaction spending the same inputs confirms first, or be dropped under that node’s configured policy. Check your wallet and current blockchain data to determine which outcome applies; an explorer’s pending list alone may not settle the question. Blockstream’s Bitcoin fundamentals guide describes these possible outcomes.

You want to speed up confirmation
An explorer reports public blockchain and mempool data; it does not control whether or when a miner includes a transaction. Blockstream states, “Blockstream cannot speed up the confirmation of your transaction.” Check whether your wallet offers a supported way to manage a pending transaction, but do not treat an explorer’s fee information as a confirmation guarantee.

Blockstream Explorer and mempool.space are public options. When comparing them, check that each is showing the intended network, whether it finds the txid, and how it displays confirmations, outputs, and fee-rate information. Their interfaces and live data can differ; do not assume that one pending view is a complete record of every node’s mempool.

Bitcoin transaction and address activity is public. Looking up an address can expose transactions associated with it, so avoid sharing an address or lookup details if that would reveal activity you prefer to keep private. A block explorer is not a private account-history service. For technical users, Blockstream’s Esplora API documentation describes self-hosting options; that is separate infrastructure work and is not needed for an ordinary lookup.
