Then verify how power changes when you add another device, whether the charger and devices support USB Power Delivery (USB PD) or PPS, and whether your cable is rated for the intended power.
Start with the devices you charge at the same time
List the devices you expect to connect together—such as a laptop, phone, and earbuds—and check each device’s charging requirements. The right charger depends on that combination; port count or a headline wattage alone cannot tell you whether the setup will work as you expect.
USB Power Delivery lets compatible equipment negotiate power: a device can request the power it requires from a compatible charger. The charger’s maximum rating is therefore not a promise that every connected device will receive that amount. Check the device’s input requirements and the charger’s output profiles, including the profile available from the port you intend to use. How many watts do you need for a laptop and phone?
There is no single wattage that suits every laptop-and-phone combination. Start with the laptop’s stated USB-C charging requirement, then check how much power the charger can provide to that laptop port while the phone is connected. The total must cover the devices’ simultaneous needs, but the distribution chart must also show an adequate allocation to each one.

USB PD Revision 3.1 specifies support for up to 240 W with a compatible full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector system. Its fixed-voltage levels include 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are specification capabilities for compatible components, not a claim that any particular charger, cable, or device supports those outputs. USB-IF’s USB PD materials describe the limits.
Check total output and per-port output separately
A charger’s total output describes its overall capacity; a port’s output describes what may be available to a device on that connection. Both matter. Do not add the advertised maximum for each port and assume all those maxima are available at the same time unless the manufacturer says so for the configuration you plan to use.

USB-IF’s multi-port source-power specification distinguishes between two allocation approaches:
- Assured-capacity ports: designed to behave independently of the status and loading of other ports.
- Shared-capacity groups: ports draw from a shared pool, so the power available can change as devices connect, disconnect, or renegotiate their power contracts.
The specification calls for labeling that identifies relevant port power and, for shared groups, the group’s total shared capacity. It also sets a minimum test capability of 5 V at 1.5 A for each USB Type-C port on a multi-port charger, independent of other ports. That is a standards test requirement—not a laptop-charging recommendation or a promise that every port on a retail charger can power a laptop. Read the power-distribution chart for your actual combination
Look for the manufacturer’s table showing what each port can supply when used alone and in combinations. Find the row or configuration for your likely setup—such as laptop plus phone—and check whether connecting a second device reduces the laptop port’s output. If the maker does not explain the allocation clearly, the headline wattage is not enough to establish how the charger will behave in your setup.
Confirm USB PD and PPS compatibility
Check the charging protocol supported by both the device and the charger. USB PD is relevant when your device’s charging requirements call for it; a charger’s maximum wattage does not by itself confirm that it offers the USB PD profile your device needs.

PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is a USB PD 3.0 feature. USB-IF says certified USB Fast Chargers support PPS, but a compatible charger, device, and host are needed to benefit. Treat PPS as a useful compatibility check when your device supports it, not as a universal requirement for every phone or laptop. USB-IF also says certified fast chargers are backwards compatible with devices supporting USB Type-C and USB PD. See its USB Fast Charger announcement.

A USB-C connector’s shape does not establish the cable’s power capability. USB-IF cautions that “All cables do not have the same capabilities.” For USB-C to USB-C cables in its certification program, power-capability markings identify 60 W or 240 W. Choose a cable rated for the power level your device and charger are intended to use, and check the marking rather than relying on appearance alone.

Cable certification applies to the cable; it does not certify the connected charger or device, and it does not increase either product’s capability. USB-IF’s USB-C cable certification guidance explains the program’s markings and scope.
Check certification claims and exact model identity
USB-IF’s product search covers products certified to bear the USB-IF logo. Its public listing defaults to products certified within the last two years. Confirm that the exact model you are considering appears in the listing and check its certification date; a similar model name or USB-C connector is not proof of certification. USB-IF notes that older products may not meet the current iteration of its compliance program and that vendors are responsible for ensuring older listed products meet current standards.
USB-IF also advises consumers to buy compliant products from trusted sources and look for its certified logos on packaging, product briefs, cables, or devices. Treat a logo or listing as a check on certification status, not as evidence that a charger has the port mix or power allocation your setup needs.
