Gemini can place ordinary calls on an Android phone using its calling app, while Google Assistant also supports hands-free calling on compatible Google speakers and displays. Gemini is the better fit for conversational help on a phone; Assistant remains useful for particular quick voice actions and home-device features. The choice depends on the device and the specific task—not on one assistant being universally better.
What “Gemini calling” means
The phrase covers two different features. One places a call from your Android device through its phone app. The other is a more limited feature in which Gemini calls a business on your behalf to handle a task. Neither means Gemini can currently answer or reject incoming calls for you.
Ordinary calls from an Android phone
Gemini can use your device’s calling app to call a saved contact, business, or phone number. It can also use conversational context—for example, you can ask it to call a restaurant you discussed earlier. For a contact, Gemini can use a relationship such as “my sister” if that relationship information is saved. The call is made through your device’s default phone app.
To use this feature, you need an Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app (including when Gemini is set as the mobile assistant), and the required Google app permission for the Android Phone app. Contact details must be saved and synced for contact calls. If Gemini does not select the connected calling app automatically, try specifying @Phone in your prompt. Google says calls that rely on other services—for example, Maps to find a nearby business—may fail if Keep Activity is off.

The calling feature is not available in Gemini Live chats, Gemini on the web, or Gemini in Google Messages. The Phone app integration cannot accept or reject incoming calls. For emergency services, Google directs users to place the call directly in the device’s calling app. See Google’s instructions for making calls with the Gemini mobile app on Android.
Gemini calls a business to handle a task
This is separate from asking Gemini to dial a business. In the business-calling feature, Gemini can call to ask about hours, availability, or service quotes; book, confirm, or manage appointments and reservations; navigate phone menus; and wait on hold. It is a narrowly eligible, gradually rolling-out feature—not a general replacement for making calls yourself.

As described in Google’s help documentation reviewed on October 7, 2026, eligibility requires all of the following:
- You are at least 18 and in the United States.
- You have a Pixel 11 with a US SIM.
- You are signed in to the Gemini app and have a Google AI subscription.
- You use the Public Beta Phone by Google app and the latest Gemini app.
- Your device language is English.
Google says the feature is rolling out gradually, so meeting those requirements does not guarantee access. It uses your mobile network and phone number, and standard carrier rates apply. Each call begins with a disclosure that a Google AI assistant is calling on your behalf on a recorded line, along with your name. You can review the proposed number and call details, monitor the call, and take over. Afterward, Gemini provides a summary; the transcript and recording are available in the Phone app’s call history.
Google applies daily call limits but does not specify a number in the help page. The feature cannot make emergency calls, complete payments or other financial transactions, or relay sensitive information such as passwords, financial details, Social Security numbers, or health information. See Google’s details on Gemini handling everyday phone calls.
How Gemini and Google Assistant work together on Android
You can set Gemini as the primary assistant on an eligible Android device. That changes the assistant experience on that device; it does not remove Assistant from every Google product you use. Google says some familiar quick voice actions may still be powered by Assistant, depending on settings. “Hey Google” and Voice Match can launch Gemini, but availability varies by language, and these features are unavailable for supervised accounts.

Some features are not supported when Gemini is the primary mobile assistant, including Interpreter mode and certain podcast, news, radio, and third-party music services. Google describes Gemini as still evolving and says that if a feature you rely on is not supported, you can switch back to Assistant. Check Google’s overview of what the Gemini mobile app can do and getting-started information for the Gemini mobile app for current setup and availability details.
Switching the phone’s primary assistant does not, by itself, switch other devices to Gemini. Google says smart speakers, displays, TVs, cars, and locked Pixel Tablets continue to use Assistant. If your main concern is what happens to a Nest speaker or display, choosing Gemini on your phone is not a blanket replacement of the assistant on that hardware. Google explains the device distinction in its Gemini mobile app setup guidance.

Calling from Google speakers and displays
Google Assistant supports voice calls on compatible Google smart speakers and displays, and video calls on compatible smart displays. The available calling method depends on the device and region. Google’s documentation describes Google Meet voice calling on speakers and displays, as well as Google-supported or mobile calling with Google Fi and Google Voice in the United States and Canada. Supported models and call types differ; some displays support video calling, and the documented options distinguish one-to-one from group calls.
This is the clearest reason to keep using Assistant if you want to place hands-free calls from compatible home hardware rather than pick up a phone. It does not make Assistant categorically better for phone calls: Gemini can also initiate ordinary calls, but it does so from an Android device through that device’s calling app. Check Google’s smart speaker and display calling guide for the current device, method, and regional details.
Which one should you use?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want conversational help on an Android phone, including asking Gemini to call a contact, number, or business. | Gemini | It handles ordinary calls through the device’s calling app and can use conversational context, subject to setup and permissions. |
| You want to accept or reject incoming calls by asking the assistant. | Neither, based on the documented Gemini Phone app feature | Gemini’s Phone app integration cannot accept or reject calls. Use the phone’s normal call controls. |
| You want hands-free calls from a compatible Google speaker or display. | Google Assistant | Assistant supports calling on compatible home devices; available methods and models vary. |
| You rely on Interpreter mode or a particular podcast, news, radio, or third-party music service. | Check whether Assistant still provides the feature you need | Some of these features are not supported when Gemini is the primary mobile assistant. |
| You want Gemini to call a business, wait on hold, or book an appointment for you. | Gemini’s separate business-calling feature, if eligible and available | It is a limited US rollout with strict device, account, subscription, and language requirements—not ordinary Phone app calling. |
To set Gemini as your primary assistant, use the Gemini mobile app’s setup flow or the assistant setting on your eligible Android device; the exact labels can vary by device and software version. Google’s getting-started guide covers the current setup. If a phone feature you depend on does not work as expected, switch back to Assistant rather than assuming that changing assistants also changes your other devices.
