In Flying Shark, steer with the eight-way joystick, fire with Shot, and use Bomb to clear threats. Build score by completing formations and saving bombs for stage-end bonuses—but use them when they are needed to stay alive. Details below distinguish the arcade rules from the NES version of Sky Shark.

Controls and the objective

Flying Shark is a vertically scrolling shooter released in 1987. In the arcade version, move in eight directions with the joystick and use the Shot and Bomb buttons to attack. The title is also known as Sky Shark on some later platforms; controls and life rules can differ by version. TATSUJIN’s official title guide describes five stages.

Enemy bullets and collisions with airborne enemies cost a life. Colliding with land- or sea-based enemies does not. When you lose a life, your power-ups reset, and you restart with three bombs.

NES version: Sky Shark

The NES manual gives that version four aircraft and three bombs per aircraft at the start. A stage ends when you reach the next airfield, and Start pauses the game. These are NES-specific details, not universal rules for every release. Nintendo’s Switch collection listing identifies the collection as including both Flying Shark and its sequel, Fire Shark.

How formations and power-ups work

Formation rewards make it worthwhile to target groups rather than simply firing at whatever is closest. The arcade rules described by TATSUJIN are:

  • Red formation: Shoot down the full formation to reveal an S item. Collect it to raise shot power by one level, up to six levels.
  • Ground targets: Destroy certain ground-based enemies to reveal a B item, which adds one bomb.
  • White formation: Shooting down the complete formation can reveal a 1UP when certain conditions are met; it is not guaranteed in every situation.
  • Yellow formation: Shoot down the complete formation to earn 1,000 points.

Because losing a life resets power-ups, collecting an S item improves firepower but does not protect that upgrade after a hit. The official rules do not specify the conditions for the white formation’s 1UP, so treat it as a possible reward rather than a dependable extra life.

Scoring and when to use bombs

At stage clear, each bomb still in your inventory is worth 3,000 points; after the bonus, the bomb inventory resets to three. That creates a trade-off: a bomb saved can add points, but a bomb used at the right moment can prevent a life loss or help clear a dangerous attack. Prioritize survival over a bonus when the screen is becoming unsafe.

The NES Sky Shark manual separately says an extra aircraft is awarded at each 50,000-point threshold. Keep that score-to-life rule specific to the NES version unless you have confirmed the rules for another release.

Movement tactics: dodge and control the screen

Keep moving and avoid getting cornered, as the NES manual advises. Movement is also useful for managing where enemies appear: TATSUJIN describes the playfield as scrolling slowly left and right with your plane as well as vertically. Its playable area is 4/3 the visible area, so lateral movement can push enemies off-screen and prevent their attacks. Use side-to-side positioning as well as forward movement instead of remaining in one lane.

The NES manual also notes that a bomb can sometimes eliminate waves of bullets. When possible, save bombs for ground targets or heavy attacks, but use one if it gives you room to survive.

Choosing a version to play

For Nintendo Switch, Nintendo lists Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark, a collection containing Flying Shark and Fire Shark. Its listing includes Arcade Mode and Super Easy Mode for both games, along with M2 gadgets that can show enemies approaching from blind spots, hidden features, upcoming items, and other information. It also lists Arcade Challenge sections and rewind. Nintendo gives August 29, 2026 as the collection’s release date. These options are documented for this collection; feature availability on other ports is not established here.

Arcade Mode is the choice for the original-style challenge; Super Easy Mode and the listed training aids offer a less demanding way to learn enemy patterns and item timing. For any platform, check the specific version’s controls and rules rather than assuming that the arcade and NES versions behave identically.
