Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Use a block explorer to look up public records of transactions, blocks, and addresses. They do different jobs, so many people use both: the wallet handles funds, while the explorer helps inspect a transaction’s public record.
What is the difference between a Bitcoin wallet and a block explorer?
A Bitcoin wallet manages or accesses the keys used to authorize transactions. It can help you receive, monitor, and send bitcoin. A block explorer is a viewing tool for information recorded on Bitcoin’s public blockchain, including blocks, transactions, and address histories. Bitcoin.org explains how Bitcoin works, and its wallet guidance describes wallet software and key management.
In short: the wallet manages keys and actions; the explorer reads public records. A confirmed transaction is recorded on the blockchain, where the network can verify that the sender is authorized to spend the bitcoin. An explorer can display that record, but it cannot sign a transaction for you. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin whitepaper page and its Bitcoin for individuals guide provide further context.
Which should you use for your task?
| What you want to do | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send or receive bitcoin | A wallet or another arrangement that controls or accesses the relevant keys | A block explorer cannot authorize or sign a transaction. |
| Look up a transaction, block, or address history | A block explorer | It displays public blockchain records; an address history is not proof of who controls the address. |
| Check a payment you made or received | Your wallet’s transaction history; optionally, an explorer | The wallet shows its own view of the payment, while an explorer can show the corresponding public record. |
| Validate blockchain data independently | Full-node software such as Bitcoin Core | A full node validates blocks and transactions itself; a lookup page or lightweight wallet may depend on data provided by other nodes or services. |
An explorer’s display is a convenient data view, not proof that you independently validated the whole network. Bitcoin Core documents its validation features; running a full node requires more storage, bandwidth, and initial synchronization than using a lightweight wallet.

How to check whether a Bitcoin transaction went through
-
Open the wallet you used and find the transaction in its history. Check its status and transaction ID, if shown.
-
If you want to inspect the public record, enter the transaction ID into a block explorer. Confirm that the displayed transaction details match the payment you expect.
-
Look at the transaction’s confirmation status. A transaction included in a block has at least one confirmation; additional blocks add confirmations.

Confirmation timing is variable. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added approximately every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum time for a particular confirmation. Fees and network conditions can affect how long a transaction waits. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ discusses Bitcoin transaction timing.
Are Bitcoin wallets and block explorers private?
No Bitcoin transaction becomes private simply because you use a wallet or an explorer. Confirmed transactions are published to the public blockchain. An explorer can make an address’s activity easy to view, but an address alone does not establish the real-world identity of its controller.
Wallet privacy also depends on how the wallet obtains transaction data. A wallet may contact outside services or peers, and its design can affect what address or payment information those parties learn. Bitcoin Core’s privacy documentation explains information that some lightweight wallet designs may reveal.

What to check before choosing a wallet app
“Wallet app” does not describe one uniform custody or verification model. Compare the specific wallet and setup on these points:
-
Key control: Find out whether you hold the keys or a provider safeguards and releases funds for you. Self-custody removes a custodian from that arrangement, but puts backup and security responsibility on you.

Protect your bitcoin when using either tool
-
Verify the entire recipient address before sending. A partial visual match is not enough.
-
Never share a recovery phrase or private key with an explorer, support chat, or website claiming to verify a transaction. Bitcoin.org’s safety guidance says legitimate people, businesses, and support teams will not ask for these secrets.
-
Anyone who obtains a self-custody recovery phrase can access the associated bitcoin. If you lose the information needed to access a self-custodied wallet, the funds may be permanently inaccessible. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance explains the importance of backups.
-
Do not assume a provider can reverse a mistaken transfer or restore a lost self-custody phrase.

Does a hardware wallet replace a wallet app or explorer?
No. A hardware wallet is an optional dedicated device for storing private keys, and some wallet software can work with one. It does not replace a block explorer, and it is not required to use wallet software. Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet directory describes this category of device.
