There is no single best Bitcoin block explorer for every job. Choose mempool.space for a visual view of pending transactions and fee rates, Blockstream Explorer for Bitcoin and Liquid data or an Esplora API and self-hosting route, and Blockchair when you need to browse multiple blockchains. For sensitive lookups, remember that a public explorer may learn which address or transaction you searched for; running an explorer yourself can reduce that third-party exposure, but it requires substantial hardware and setup.
Which Bitcoin block explorer should you use?
These services are best treated as different tools, not as a ranked list. The feature descriptions below come from a comparison published by Koinly; they are not the result of hands-on testing. No comparable public response-time benchmark establishes which service is fastest.
| Reader priority | Explorer to consider | Why it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual mempool and fee information | mempool.space | Koinly describes projected mempool blocks, fee-rate visualization, and CPFP and RBF analysis. | These are feature descriptions, not measured speed results. Features can change. |
| Bitcoin and Liquid data, API access, or a self-hosted explorer | Blockstream Explorer / Esplora | Blockstream documents its explorer for Bitcoin and Liquid and provides the open-source Esplora technology. | API pricing and allowances can change. Self-hosting has significant resource requirements. |
| Browsing several blockchains | Blockchair | Koinly describes broad multi-chain coverage and transaction-analysis features. | Supported chains and features can change; privacy statements are provider claims, not independent audits. |
| Reduce exposure of lookup queries to a third party | Self-host an explorer, if you can maintain it | A locally operated instance can keep queries within your own setup. | It takes technical work, a synchronized node, storage, and compute; it does not make your on-chain activity anonymous. |
What a block explorer does—and does not do
Blockstream Help Center describes its explorer as “a tool that displays public information about Bitcoin transaction activity.” That includes transaction activity that is not yours. An explorer reads and presents public blockchain data; it does not hold your bitcoin, provide access to your wallet, or give you control over an address.
It also cannot make a payment confirm, reverse a confirmed transaction, or refund a transfer. Blockstream Help Center says, “Bitcoin transactions are confirmed when miners include them in a block.” The explorer displays the network’s public information; miners and the Bitcoin network determine confirmation.

Can a block explorer see your address lookup?
A public explorer receives the request you send to it. Depending on the service and how you connect, the provider may be able to associate a searched address or transaction with connection details such as an IP address, requested URL, or referrer. Blockchair’s privacy policy discusses these kinds of information, as well as analytics and third-party infrastructure. That is the provider’s own description, not an independent privacy audit or proof that every lookup is linked to a person.
Keep three privacy concepts separate:
- On-chain pseudonymity: Bitcoin addresses are public identifiers, not names by themselves. Public transaction history can still reveal patterns, and an address may be linked to a person through information outside the chain.
- Public-explorer lookup privacy: The service you query may see the lookup and technical details of the request. A provider privacy policy is not a guarantee of anonymity.
- Self-hosted query privacy: Using your own explorer can avoid sending the query to a public explorer provider, but does not erase public blockchain records or conceal other network activity.
Blockchair’s policy is evidence of what that provider says it may handle; it should not be treated as a description of every explorer. Likewise, Blockchain.com’s privacy policy covers information across its broader platform, including wallet and account information, so those categories should not automatically be attributed to an anonymous explorer lookup.

How to check the mempool and fee information
If you want to understand current congestion before sending a transaction, a mempool view can help you see pending transactions and fee-rate ranges. Koinly describes mempool.space as showing projected blocks and visualizing fee rates, with CPFP and RBF analysis. These displays are decision aids, not promises of a confirmation time: actual inclusion depends on miners selecting transactions and on changing network conditions.
RBF (Replace-by-Fee) is a protocol feature that supported wallets or services can use to replace an eligible unconfirmed transaction with one that pays a higher fee. CPFP (Child Pays for Parent) is a fee-management technique in which a child transaction can incentivize miners to include an unconfirmed parent. An explorer may help you inspect these relationships, but it does not itself raise a fee or accelerate confirmation; use a wallet or service that supports the relevant method.

Can you run your own Bitcoin block explorer?
Yes. Self-hosting is an option for people comfortable operating a node and maintaining an indexing service. Koinly describes self-hosting routes for mempool.space and Esplora. In a February 11, 2025 announcement, Blockstream estimated that an Esplora setup would need a fully synced Bitcoin node with around 600 GB of storage, an additional approximately 1.7 TB data store, SSD storage, at least 16 CPUs, and 64 GB of RAM. These are Blockstream’s published estimates for that setup—not a universal minimum for every explorer or configuration—and requirements may change.
A Raspberry Pi may be part of some node packages or setups, but a board by itself is not a complete explorer. Check the current storage, memory, and compute requirements for the specific software and configuration before choosing hardware. For an occasional transaction lookup, a public explorer is much simpler; self-hosting makes most sense when local query control and ongoing operation are worth the cost and maintenance.

Blockstream API allowance: check current terms
Blockstream’s February 11, 2025 API announcement said its Explorer API free tier included 500,000 requests per month. This is a time-sensitive allowance, not a permanent guarantee; consult Blockstream’s current API documentation and terms before relying on it. The same announcement gives the Esplora hardware estimates above.

How to choose for a specific lookup
- Checking a pending transaction or fee market: Start with mempool.space’s visual mempool and fee displays.
- Looking up Bitcoin or Liquid data: Consider Blockstream Explorer; developers can evaluate the Esplora API and its current terms.
- Moving between supported chains: Consider Blockchair, and verify that it currently supports the network and data you need.
- Keeping a query off a public explorer: Use a self-hosted instance if you can operate and maintain one. Otherwise, account for the fact that the public service receives your request.
- Making a routine transaction lookup: A familiar public explorer is convenient, but it remains a read-only window onto public ledger data.
