To survive longer in Flying Shark, prioritize avoiding airborne enemies, keep firing while moving deliberately, and learn when to use your bombs. The arcade game has five stages, and losing a life resets your shot power—so staying alive protects both your plane and its upgrades. If you’re playing the enhanced Steam edition, its beginner modes and practice tools can help you learn without changing the rules that apply to every version.
What ends a run—and what does not
Your plane is destroyed if enemy shots hit it or if it collides with an airborne enemy. By contrast, the official TATSUJIN Flying Shark/Sky Shark guide says collisions with enemies on land or sea do not cost a life. That makes airborne threats the key positioning hazard: watch the space around your plane, not only the targets you are trying to shoot.
The arcade controls are an eight-way joystick, a Shot button and a separate Bomb button. Practice moving and firing together, and make sure you can reach the bomb input without searching for it when a threat closes in.
How to use formations and pickups
Red aircraft formations: build shot power
Shoot down every aircraft in a red formation to produce an S item, which raises shot power by one level. The official guide describes six power levels. Since a lost life resets power-ups, surviving also helps preserve the strength you have built up.

- Includes Flying Shark (1987), Fire Shark (1989), and Wardner (1987)!
- Super Easy or Arcade Challenge? New bonus modes for every skill level!

Ground enemies: look for bombs
Destroying certain ground enemies can reveal a B item that adds one bomb. Not every ground target is stated to produce one, so treat a B item as an opportunity rather than an assured drop.
White aircraft formations: a conditional extra life
Shooting down every aircraft in a white formation can yield a 1UP when certain conditions are met. Clearing the formation does not guarantee an extra life every time.

When to spend a bomb
Bombs destroy enemies and are a limited survival resource. Use one when it helps you avoid an immediate threat or clear danger; there is no documented universally optimal wave or timing for using it.
The official rules give bombs a stage-clear value as well: each bomb remaining earns 3,000 bonus points, then your inventory resets to three. That is a scoring incentive to finish with bombs in reserve, not a reason to risk a life when a bomb could get you out of danger. After losing a life, you begin with three bombs, but your power-ups reset.

A practical routine for learning
- Rehearse movement while firing. Use the eight-way controls to move with intention instead of making large, panicked sweeps.
- Test the bomb input early. Confirm which button activates it so it is available to you under pressure.
- Watch where airborne enemies approach. Pay attention to the area around your plane as well as the targets ahead.
- Learn one threat pattern per attempt. After a death, account for the power-up reset and three starting bombs, then focus the next run on recognizing one new hazard.
This is a practice approach based on the documented controls and mechanics, not a tested route through particular enemy waves.
What changes in the enhanced Steam edition
The Steam listing for the enhanced PC edition advertises beginner and Very Easy modes, customizable practice, autofire assists, quick saves and rewind. These are edition-specific options; do not assume they exist in arcade cabinets or other ports.
Rank #4
- The excitement of an arcade right at home.
- Giant 3 foot long track.
- 2 ways to play: roll the ball by hand or fire the balls with the launcher.
- Each player gets 60 seconds… high score wins.
Steam also describes an off-screen viewing mechanic: moving left or right can expand the field of vision beyond the screen borders to reveal hidden threats. Try that movement deliberately when learning where danger is coming from. The edition lists controller support, but a gamepad is optional; the sources do not identify a best model or confirm specific hardware.
For a relaxed learning run, use a beginner difficulty or practice setting and the available assists. For a clean score attempt, choose conditions without saves, rewind or assists. These are different ways to practice, not changes to the underlying arcade mechanics.

How much of the game is ahead
TATSUJIN’s official game page states, “There are a total of five stages.” Reaching later stages therefore means building a run that lasts across a five-stage game, rather than progressing through an indefinitely long series of levels.
