Flying Shark is the 1987 original; Fire Shark is its 1989 sequel. Both are vertically scrolling Toaplan shooters with eight-way joystick movement, Shot, and Bomb controls. The big differences are that Flying Shark has five stages and scrolls horizontally with your plane, while Fire Shark has ten stages and lets you choose among three weapon types.
Is Fire Shark a sequel to Flying Shark?
Yes. TATSUJIN lists Flying Shark (飛翔鮫) as a 1987 game and Fire Shark (鮫!鮫!鮫!) as a 1989 release. The official Flying Shark page and official Fire Shark page establish the release order; Fire Shark’s story also says the Flying Shark fighter is revived as Fire Shark.

Both official game pages describe the same basic controls: an eight-way joystick, Shot, and Bomb. Enemy fire or a collision with an airborne enemy destroys the plane and costs a life. The games therefore share a familiar arcade-shooter foundation, but their stage length and weapon decisions give each a different rhythm.
How does Flying Shark’s scrolling work?
Flying Shark was the first Toaplan vertical shooter to scroll horizontally in response to the player’s movement while continuing to scroll vertically, according to TATSUJIN. The official page describes the playable area as 4/3 the displayed area. In practical terms, moving left or right reveals more of the playfield; the player can use that space to scroll enemies off-screen and limit their attacks. This is the game’s defining tactical distinction from the weapon-focused changes in its sequel.

How do the weapons differ?
Flying Shark: build one shot type
In Flying Shark, S items increase shot power through six levels. Its weapon choice is straightforward: collect upgrades to strengthen the same shot family. Losing a life resets shot power, so a death can also mean rebuilding that strength.
Fire Shark: choose among three shot families
Fire Shark uses colored items to grant different shot types: blue for Wide Shot, green for Beam Shot, and red for Fire Shot. Separate items affect shot power and speed. At full power, Fire Shot expands to cover nearly all directions, making it a distinct option from the broad coverage of Wide Shot or the focused Beam Shot. After a lost life, power-ups reset and the player returns with Wide Shot and three bombs.

Where can you play both games now?
Nintendo’s US listing for Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark includes both arcade games and lists an August 29, 2026 release date. The Switch collection is published and developed by M2. Nintendo describes Arcade Mode and Super Easy Mode, plus M2 gadgets that provide enemy, hidden-feature, and item information. Arcade Challenge divides stages into shorter practice areas and includes rewind.
That listing describes the digital edition. A September 14, 2026 Creative Bloq review says the physical edition also includes NES, Mega Drive, and Genesis game versions plus Wardner, while those versions are paid DLC for the digital edition. Edition contents can vary, so check the regional listing and the specific seller’s description before buying a physical copy.
