BitGo is a digital-asset infrastructure provider that offers institutional custody through regulated entities. Its custody service combines key management with transaction approvals, cold-storage options, reporting, and related services. How it works for a particular customer depends on the contracting entity, jurisdiction, asset, and custody arrangement. The essential diligence questions are who controls each key, who can authorize withdrawals, how recovery works, and what the applicable insurance actually covers.

What BitGo does

BitGo provides institutions with custody and infrastructure for digital assets. Rather than simply supplying wallet software, its offering includes procedures and controls for safeguarding assets and authorizing transfers. BitGo describes its institutional custody as qualified custody and says client assets are held separately from its corporate balance sheets. Those are company descriptions, not a universal legal conclusion: the applicable entity, contract, jurisdiction, and facts determine the treatment of a client’s assets.

BitGo’s custody-wallet page names BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association; BitGo New York Trust Company, LLC; BitGo Europe GmbH; and BitGo GmbH (Switzerland) as entities through which custody wallets are provided. Availability and eligibility may differ by location, and a customer should confirm which entity it would contract with and which terms apply. BitGo’s institutional custody overview and its custodial-wallet page describe the service and named entities.

How institutional custody works

A custodian safeguards digital-asset keys and provides a process for approving movements. A typical institutional workflow separates transaction initiation from approval: authorized users propose a withdrawal, configured checks are applied, and the required people or keys approve it before signing and broadcast. The exact roles, checks, signing setup, and recovery procedures depend on the customer’s account and chosen implementation.

Transaction controls and audit trail

BitGo describes controls including address allowlisting, transaction or velocity limits, user roles, approval policies, transaction validation, hardware security modules (HSMs), and audit logs. These controls can help institutions restrict who may act and where funds may be sent, and provide records for oversight. They reduce particular operational risks; they do not eliminate the risks of compromised credentials, mistakes, service disruption, or other incidents. Ask for the actual policy configuration and incident and recovery procedures rather than assuming a feature is enabled in every account. BitGo’s security page describes its stated controls and wallet architecture.

Cold storage and access

BitGo describes its institutional custody wallets as cold-storage oriented. Keeping keys offline can reduce exposure to internet-connected systems, but it does not make assets risk-free. Offline handling also makes withdrawal access dependent on operational procedures, approvals, and service availability. Institutions should establish expected withdrawal processes and service levels for their own account, including what happens during an urgent request or a disruption.

Multi-signature and MPC: what changes

Signing design determines how key control is divided, but neither multi-signature nor MPC by itself constitutes a complete custody program. Asset support, key ownership, approval policies, recovery design, and legal responsibility remain important.

Approach How signing works Practical diligence
Multi-signature (multisig) Multiple separately managed keys sign the transaction. BitGo’s technical paper describes 2-of-3 as a common arrangement; its security page characterizes its setup as M-of-N, requiring multiple parties to sign. Determine who holds each key, the threshold required to transact, how a signer is replaced, and how the arrangement applies to the specific asset.
Multi-party computation (MPC) Distributed key shares participate in cryptographic computation to produce a signature without assembling the complete private key in one location. Establish which parties control shares, how approvals and recovery work, and whether the asset and implementation support the method.

The supported assets and implementation affect which signing method is available. BitGo’s technical comparison of multi-signature and MPC explains the approaches; it should not be read as a guarantee that either method alone ensures security.

Custody versus self-custody

The main trade-off is where key-management responsibility and operational work sit. With a custody service, the institution relies on the custodian’s controls and procedures. With self-custody, the institution directly controls the keys and must operate its own security, governance, recovery, and compliance processes. Shared-key arrangements can divide responsibility, so “custody” and “self-custody” are not always a simple all-or-nothing distinction.

  • Custody may suit an institution that wants an external provider to handle key-management operations and supply transaction controls, reporting, and service procedures. It adds dependence on the provider, the relevant legal entity, and the account’s terms.
  • Self-custody may suit an institution that needs direct control and has the people, processes, and technical capability to secure keys, enforce approvals, maintain continuity, and respond to incidents. Direct control also leaves those operational responsibilities with the institution.

Compare the actual arrangements, not just their labels: who can initiate and approve a transaction, who holds each key or share, what happens if a person or credential is unavailable, and how the institution regains access after a disruption.

How BitGo’s stated insurance works

BitGo advertises a policy limit of up to $250 million for loss, theft, and misuse when BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A. holds all keys. In its insurance FAQ, last updated May 2025, BitGo says coverage applies only where its regulated entities hold all private keys and generally addresses keys stolen, lost, or misused by BitGo. The FAQ says the policy does not cover cases where a client or third party holds some keys, citing hot wallets as an example. The $250 million figure is a stated limit under a condition—not a guaranteed recovery, nor an assurance that every asset, account, or loss is covered.

The public insurance page and FAQ are not the full operative policy. Before relying on coverage, obtain the current policy and confirm the insured parties, covered loss events, exclusions, claims process, and how proceeds would be allocated. BitGo’s 2025 FAQ says customers may work with broker Woodruff Sawyer for additional insurance; it also describes a possible separate KRS insurance route for hot-wallet clients through Digital Asset Services. Availability and terms need to be confirmed for the specific customer and arrangement. See BitGo’s digital-asset insurance page and its insurance FAQs.

What institutions should verify before choosing a custody arrangement

A useful assessment starts with the account’s legal and operational details, not a headline security feature. Work through these questions with the provider and, where appropriate, legal and insurance advisers:

  • Entity and jurisdiction: Which BitGo entity will provide the service? Is the service and asset available to this customer in its jurisdiction, and which agreement and governing law apply?
  • Asset segregation and legal treatment: What does the contract say about holding and segregation? What legal treatment applies in the relevant jurisdiction? Treat BitGo’s segregation statement as its description, not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific analysis.
  • Key control and signing: Who controls each key or share, who may initiate and approve transfers, what threshold is required, and which signing methods are supported for each asset?
  • Access and resilience: What are the withdrawal procedures and expected service levels? How are lost credentials, unavailable approvers, personnel changes, disaster recovery, and incident response handled?
  • Governance and records: Which role controls, allowlists, limits, approval rules, and audit records are available and configured for this account?
  • Insurance: Which entity holds all keys, if that is a condition? What events and exclusions apply, who is insured, what is the applicable limit, and how are claims and proceeds handled?

These questions help distinguish a provider’s general product description from the protections and responsibilities in a particular customer’s arrangement.
