To run Claude Code through your AWS account, enable its Bedrock mode, set an AWS region, provide working AWS credentials, and ensure the account and IAM identity can invoke the Claude model you want. The main switch is CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1; Claude Code also needs AWS_REGION set explicitly. Amazon Bedrock is separate from Claude Platform on AWS, so use Bedrock’s model-access and credential setup—not Claude Platform’s workspace sign-in.
Before configuring Claude Code
Confirm that your AWS account can use Amazon Bedrock in the region you intend to use, and that the Claude model you plan to select is available to your account there. AWS model availability and access requirements vary. Review the current Claude Code Bedrock setup guide and AWS model access instructions for the target model and region.
Depending on the model and account, AWS may require Marketplace permissions, a valid payment method, or submission of Anthropic’s first-time use case information. AWS says this first-time-use requirement does not apply to models accessed through the bedrock-mantle endpoint. These account-level prerequisites are distinct from the runtime permissions granted to the IAM identity Claude Code uses.
Configure credentials and enable Bedrock mode
Claude Code uses the AWS SDK default credential chain for Bedrock. Use an approved AWS credential method that is already working in your environment; the Bedrock workflow described by Anthropic does not dynamically assume a role for you.

- AWS CLI or profile: Configure a profile with the AWS CLI. For an AWS IAM Identity Center (SSO) profile, authenticate with
aws sso login --profile PROFILE_NAME, then make that profile available to Claude Code, for example withAWS_PROFILE=PROFILE_NAME. - Environment credentials: Set credentials through the AWS SDK-supported environment variables if that is your organization’s approved method.

Avoid placing long-lived secrets in shell history, source control, or shared configuration. Follow your organization’s credential and secret-management policy.
Set the Bedrock mode and region in the shell where you will launch Claude Code:

export ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL_AWS_REGION=us-west-2Change the example regions to match your configuration. These commands apply to the current shell session; add them to an appropriate shell startup or project environment configuration only if that is suitable for your security and team practices.
Select a Claude model when needed
Claude Code supports model overrides through ANTHROPIC_MODEL and ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL. Depending on your setup, the value can be a Bedrock model ID or an inference profile ARN. Check AWS’s current model catalog and the current Anthropic setup guide for the exact identifier and regional availability before setting an override.
The surfaced guide includes older Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku identifiers as examples. Treat them as historical examples, not current recommendations or guaranteed defaults: model IDs, inference profiles, and regional support change. For example, an override follows this pattern, but the value must be replaced with an identifier AWS currently supports for your account and region:

export ANTHROPIC_MODEL="BEDROCK_MODEL_ID_OR_INFERENCE_PROFILE_ARN"Do not copy an old model identifier merely because it appears in a configuration example. Confirm that the selected model and any inference profile are available in the region specified by AWS_REGION.
Grant the required IAM permissions
The IAM identity used by Claude Code needs permission to invoke the selected Bedrock resource. Anthropic’s example policy identifies these actions:
bedrock:InvokeModelbedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStreambedrock:ListInferenceProfiles
Scope the policy’s resources to the inference profiles and application inference profiles your configuration actually uses, rather than granting broader access than necessary. The Anthropic guide provides example resource ARN patterns. Separately, ensure the AWS account has completed any required model-access or Marketplace steps; an IAM policy alone does not establish account-level access to a model.

Verify the setup and troubleshoot common errors
Claude Code does not use Bedrock
Check that CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK is set to 1 in the same environment from which Claude Code is launched. Confirm that AWS_REGION is explicitly set there as well; a region in the AWS config file does not replace this setting for Claude Code’s Bedrock configuration.
Credentials or authentication fail
Verify that the AWS CLI or selected credential method works in the environment running Claude Code. If you use an SSO profile, run aws sso login for that profile before starting Claude Code. The documented workflow relies on the AWS SDK default credential chain and does not perform dynamic role assumption on its own.
Access is denied
Check both sides of access: whether the account is allowed to use the model and whether the IAM identity has the needed invocation actions on the relevant resource ARN. Also review any Marketplace permission, payment-method, or first-time use case prerequisites applicable to the model and account.

The region or model is unavailable
Verify the model and inference profile in the target region using AWS’s current catalog. Anthropic’s guide recommends checking inference profiles in that region and selecting a supported region when necessary. If the small/fast model uses a different region, configure ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL_AWS_REGION accordingly.
An on-demand throughput error appears
Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance says to specify the model as an inference profile ID when an on-demand throughput error occurs. Confirm that the profile is valid and available in the region you configured.
Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS are different services
Amazon Bedrock is operated by AWS and exposes Bedrock APIs, including Converse and InvokeModel. Claude Platform on AWS is operated by Anthropic and uses the Anthropic Messages API. Their operators, API surfaces, authentication approaches, feature availability, and data-processing arrangements differ. This article’s steps are for Bedrock; do not substitute Claude Platform workspace or authentication setup.
AWS describes Bedrock as the choice for requirements such as AWS-operated inference, AWS as the sole data processor, or coverage under named AWS compliance programs. Confirm eligibility for the specific service, program, account, and workload with AWS rather than treating those descriptions as a blanket compliance guarantee.
