If GitHub’s private vulnerability reporting option is unavailable, first check the repository’s SECURITY.md or Security policy page and follow its instructions. If it gives no private contact route, open a public issue asking only for the maintainers’ preferred security contact. Do not include the vulnerability, reproduction steps, or proof of concept in that issue.
Choose the safest available reporting route
GitHub’s private vulnerability reporting is available only when maintainers enable it for a public repository on GitHub.com. It is separate from the repository’s security policy. Check the repository page for its Security policy and look for SECURITY.md before deciding that no private route exists. GitHub’s instructions are in Privately reporting a security vulnerability.
| Route | How it works | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Private vulnerability report | If the repository has enabled the feature, the report form sends details privately to maintainers. Its default fields are summary, details, proof of concept, and impact; maintainers may customize required fields. | Use the “Report a vulnerability” option when it is available. |
| Security policy or contact route | The repository’s SECURITY.md or Security policy may identify a contact method and supported versions. |
Follow the policy’s reporting instructions, including its stated scope and contact method. |
| Public contact-request issue | If there is no private reporting option or policy contact, the request is publicly visible as soon as it is posted. | Ask only for the preferred security contact. Keep all details about the vulnerability out of the issue. |
Make a public request without exposing the vulnerability
GitHub’s documented fallback when private reporting is unavailable is to follow the repository’s security policy or create an issue asking maintainers for a preferred security contact. If no private route is provided, make the issue a short contact request, not a vulnerability report. GitHub explains this fallback in its private reporting guidance.
For example: “I would like to report a potential security issue affecting this repository. What is your preferred private contact method?” Do not add a bug description, affected component, exploit steps, proof of concept, credentials, or victim data. An issue is public; deleting or editing it later cannot guarantee that nobody saw or copied its contents.

Prepare the private report
Once maintainers provide a private channel, send a concise report that lets them assess and reproduce the issue while avoiding unnecessary exposure of sensitive information. Include:
- A short summary and the repository, component, and affected versions, if known.
- Prerequisites and exact reproduction steps, with the observed behavior and what you expected to happen.
- A minimal proof of concept that demonstrates the issue without using real user data or accessing systems outside your authorized scope.
- The likely impact and any safe mitigation or fix ideas you can offer.
GitHub’s private report form defaults to summary, details, proof of concept, and impact statement, though maintainers can change required fields. Provide enough detail for verification, but do not include secrets, real user information, or data collected beyond the authorized scope.

Set disclosure expectations and keep communication records
In the private report, note when you first contacted the project, propose a disclosure timeline, and say how you can help validate a fix. Keep dated copies of your messages and record any timeline or other terms you and the maintainers agree to. GitHub recommends making disclosure terms clear, but its guidance does not establish one deadline that applies to every project.
Continue coordinating privately while maintainers investigate and remediate. GitHub recommends that full details generally wait until maintainers have acknowledged the issue and, ideally, fixed it or made a patch available. Its coordinated disclosure guidance allows that public disclosure may be appropriate after attempted contact without a response or after an unreasonably long request to wait. The right decision depends on the risk to users, the project’s response, and any applicable policy; do not treat that guidance as a fixed countdown.

What maintainers should do after receiving a report
GitHub recommends that maintainers acknowledge reports promptly, work with the reporter to verify validity and impact, consider the reporter’s input during remediation, credit them when appropriate, publish a fix promptly, and make the wider ecosystem aware of the issue and its remediation.
Repository security advisories provide a way to collaborate privately and publish after work on a fix. When preparing an advisory, GitHub recommends specifying the ecosystem, package, affected versions, impact, references, and any patch or workaround. When possible, identify the fixed version so users have a clear update target. If no fix is planned, say so and include useful mitigations. See GitHub’s repository security advisory guidance.

GitHub is a CVE Numbering Authority, and eligible advisory creators may request a CVE. GitHub’s documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, says CVE requests are usually reviewed within 72 hours. That is the review time for the request, not a maintainer response target or disclosure deadline; requesting a CVE does not make the advisory public, and not every report qualifies.
