A Citrix NetScaler ADC—now documented under the product name NetScaler—sits between clients and application servers. It accepts a request at a virtual server, chooses a configured backend service, and forwards the traffic. It can also check server health, apply traffic policies, and perform selected security and performance functions, depending on how it is configured.

How a NetScaler ADC handles a request

ADC means application delivery controller. NetScaler is an application switch/controller that analyzes traffic at Layers 4–7 of the network stack: from transport-level details such as ports and protocols up to application-level information. In a basic load-balancing setup, the request path is:

  1. The client connects to a virtual server. The client uses the virtual server’s IP address, port, and protocol. This is the application-facing endpoint.
  2. NetScaler selects a service. A service represents a backend application server, identified by its IP address, port, and protocol.
  3. NetScaler forwards the request. It sends traffic to the selected server. The virtual server can terminate the client connection and open a new connection to the server, or reuse an existing server-side connection.
  4. The response returns through the delivery path. NetScaler manages the connections and traffic according to the configured virtual server, services, algorithms, and policies.

The official NetScaler 14.1 documentation says the default load-balancing method is Least Connections: it selects a service based on the number of active connections. Administrators can configure other algorithms. See How load balancing works.

Virtual server

A virtual server is the client-facing application endpoint on NetScaler. It is a logical configuration, not necessarily a separate physical server. Its address, port, and protocol define where clients connect; its configuration determines how matching traffic is handled.

Service

A service is NetScaler’s configuration for a backend server or application endpoint. It specifies where NetScaler can send traffic, including the server’s IP address, port, and protocol. A virtual server can distribute requests across multiple services.

Monitor

A monitor checks whether a service is responding. NetScaler probes backend services and can mark one down when it meets configured failure thresholds. Load balancing can then continue across the remaining available services. This supports availability, but does not guarantee uninterrupted service in every failure scenario. The exact probe and threshold behavior depends on configuration. See Load balance traffic on a NetScaler appliance.

What else NetScaler can do

Load balancing is one part of the product. NetScaler combines traffic management with selected optimization and security capabilities. The available functions depend on the deployment, configuration, and applicable licensing.

  • Application-aware traffic handling: decisions can use information such as URLs, application data types, or cookies.
  • Performance optimization: functions include SSL processing offload, compression, client keep-alive, TCP buffering, and static or dynamic content caching.
  • Policy enforcement: a policy pairs an expression that matches traffic with an action for that traffic. For example, an administrator could configure a policy to match a request pattern and drop or reset the connection. A policy only acts when configured; its presence should not be assumed to provide automatic protection.
  • Authentication, authorization, and auditing: authentication verifies credentials, authorization determines what protected content a user may access, and auditing records user activity. Credentials can be checked locally or through a third-party authentication server.

NetScaler’s documentation groups its capabilities around data switching, firewall security, optimization, policy infrastructure, and packet flow. For the product overview and optimization functions, see Getting started with NetScaler. For AAA, see How authentication, authorization, and auditing works.

Where NetScaler fits in a deployment

NetScaler is an integrated appliance for application security, optimization, and traffic management. It can complement existing load balancers, servers, caches, and firewalls rather than necessarily replacing every component. Administrators can configure it through a web GUI or command-line interface. Current product documentation uses the name NetScaler, although many readers and deployments still use “Citrix NetScaler.” See Introduction to the NetScaler product line.

One documented use is a Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environment: NetScaler Gateway can provide secure remote access, while load-balancing virtual servers can serve StoreFront and other components. This is one deployment pattern, not the only purpose of an ADC. See Setting up NetScaler for Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.

Licensing note for current deployments

NetScaler’s official licensing guidance says file-based licensing reached end of life on April 15, 2026, and that NetScaler Automated Licensing (LAS) is the activation and licensing path for instances thereafter. The page lists minimum compatible NetScaler ADC versions, including 14.1-51.x and 13.1-60.x, with a separate FIPS version requirement. Version requirements can change; check the current LAS for NetScaler guidance and confirm compatibility before planning an installation or upgrade.
