Start with Windows Update if your audio works normally or you need a driver. If it cannot find a suitable driver, the problem persists, or an update has broken sound, check the official support page for your exact PC or audio-device model. Neither source is universally better: the right choice depends on the device and the problem.
How the two driver sources differ
Windows Update is the simplest starting point. Microsoft says recommended drivers may be installed automatically, while optional driver updates may need to be selected manually. For its current instructions, see Microsoft’s guide to recommended and updated hardware drivers.
An official manufacturer support page can provide a package specific to your PC or audio device and Windows version. That route is useful when Windows Update does not find a suitable or updated driver, or when a manufacturer lists a package for your exact model that Windows has not offered. Microsoft’s audio-driver instructions explain how to look up the model and choose a compatible driver.
These labels describe different things: “manufacturer” can mean who created the driver, while “Windows Update” describes how it is delivered. Microsoft says many drivers come from third-party providers and are certified for Windows compatibility; Microsoft also makes some drivers, particularly for Surface and other Microsoft-branded devices. Which source should you use?

Microsoft does not establish that either route is universally more reliable or delivers better audio performance. A newer version number alone is not proof that a driver is the right one for your device.
Install an audio driver through Windows Update
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update. On Windows 10, the page is under Update & Security; on Windows 11, open Windows Update directly in Settings.
- Select Check for updates and let Windows install any recommended driver updates it offers.
- To look for optional drivers, open Advanced options, then Optional updates, and review the driver updates shown. Select an audio driver only if it is relevant to your device.
- Restart Windows after installation, then test the audio device and the specific problem you were trying to solve.
Available options and labels can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s Windows Update driver guidance describes recommended and optional driver delivery.

Find the correct manufacturer driver
- Identify the exact model of your PC or audio device. If you use a laptop or desktop with integrated audio, start with the computer manufacturer’s support page; for a separate audio device, use that device maker’s official support page.
- On the official site, search by the exact model and open its drivers or downloads section.
- Choose an audio driver listed for your installed Windows version. Do not assume a package for a similar model or a different Windows version is interchangeable.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, including any restart request, and then test whether the original issue has changed.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is installed, it is still possible that the manufacturer offers a newer package. Microsoft explicitly notes this in its audio-driver guidance.
Restore sound after an update
If audio stopped working right after a Windows or driver update, work through the documented recovery options according to what changed and what Windows shows. Microsoft lists updating or rolling back the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling it, restarting audio services, and trying the generic Windows driver as troubleshooting steps.

- Update or roll back the driver: In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, open the audio device’s properties, and use the Driver tab to update or roll back when the option is available. Rollback is relevant when the problem began after a recent driver change.
- Uninstall and reinstall: If updating or rollback does not help, uninstall the audio device in Device Manager and restart Windows so it can attempt to reinstall the driver. Follow Microsoft’s steps in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.
- Restart audio services: Microsoft’s post-update audio troubleshooting guide includes restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Try the generic Windows driver: If the device-specific driver is causing trouble, Microsoft documents trying the generic audio driver as another recovery option. Use the steps in its sound troubleshooting guide.
Restart after installing or rolling back when the instructions call for it, then check whether the original symptom is resolved before switching to another driver source. Avoid third-party driver-download sites; Microsoft’s guidance points to Windows Update and the device manufacturer’s official support page.

Microsoft’s audio-driver instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software, technical assistance, or security fixes under the support described by Microsoft. The date does not change the need to choose a driver compatible with the installed Windows version.
