How free Battle Pass progress works
Playing matches earns Battle Pass XP. In Season 5, that XP can contribute to the current Battle Pass and one selected Unvaulted Pass simultaneously. This lets you make progress without purchasing Premium, but it does not unlock every Premium reward.

Blizzard’s Season 5 overview does not give a complete tier-by-tier schedule of free rewards or their unlock requirements. Check the in-game Battle Pass screen for the current season’s exact reward track and what you can claim at each point.
Choose the reward path you want to pursue
The revamped pass lets players prioritize a Legendary Battle Pass skin. Blizzard described the choice in its Season 4 announcement as available after an introductory track; Season 5 says the flexible progression system continues. Use the current in-game display to see the available route and requirements rather than relying on older tier counts.

Do not confuse reward prioritization with the Tier Hack. The Season 4 announcement described that feature as a way for Premium owners to swap an eligible Legendary reward for a cosmetic from a curated seasonal pool; it is not a free-pass option.
Use event challenges when they award Battle Pass XP
Event challenges can provide another route, but the reward depends on the event. In Season 5’s Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, challenges earn Offerings, and each Offering you pledge grants Battle Pass XP. The event is scheduled for October 6 through November 2, 2026, according to Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement.

Check an event’s own challenge descriptions before counting on it for pass progress: not every event challenge is established as a source of Battle Pass XP.
Consider an Unvaulted Pass for eligible older rewards
Season 5 adds revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15. If you previously progressed an eligible pass, that free-track progress carries forward. You can direct match XP to the current pass and one Unvaulted Pass together; after completing the active Unvaulted Pass, it advances to another available one automatically unless you choose otherwise. An Unvaulted Pass you acquire remains available on your account.

Unvaulted Passes do not reproduce the original Premium reward set in full. Blizzard excludes Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, and Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins. See the Season 5 overview for the current description of these passes.

Do not rely on old XP or reward figures
Blizzard’s original launch explainer discussed daily and weekly challenges and a group XP boost for Season One. Those details are historical, and the current Season 5 materials reviewed do not confirm that the same schedules or boost apply now. Likewise, reward quantities announced for Season 4 or Season 10 should not be treated as Season 5 free-track guarantees.
