MRPL’s share price is shaped in part by expectations for refining profitability, especially gross refining margin (GRM), but margins do not explain every market move. Product crack spreads, inventory gains or losses, refinery throughput, operating efficiency, crude sourcing, crude-price volatility and foreign exchange all affect the company’s results. These factors help frame an investment analysis; they do not establish a price forecast or prove why the stock moved on a particular day.
How refining margins affect MRPL
A refinery buys crude oil and sells products such as diesel, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and petrol. A product’s crack spread is the difference between its market price and the crude benchmark used for comparison. Because product prices and demand differ, cracks are product-specific rather than a single uniform margin.
MRPL’s realized economics depend on more than market cracks. The crude grades it processes, the mix and yield of products it produces, the volume it runs and operating efficiency all matter. Reported GRM can also reflect inventory gains or losses: CRISIL attributed MRPL’s FY2025–26 GRM recovery to healthy product cracks and high inventory gains amid crude-price volatility. A reported GRM therefore should not be treated as interchangeable with a market crack-spread benchmark.
MRPL’s FY2024–25 annual report said cracks for high-speed diesel (HSD), ATF and motor spirit (MS, or petrol) fell by 42%, 36% and 33%, respectively, amid changing demand and new refinery supply. The company’s reported GRM was $4.45 per barrel that year, down from $10.36 per barrel in FY2023–24. In its June 2026 rationale, CRISIL reported FY2025–26 GRM of $9.22 per barrel. These are period-specific reported figures, not a promise of future margins.

What the operating figures show
| Measure | FY2024–25 | FY2025–26 |
|---|---|---|
| Reported GRM | $4.45 per barrel (MRPL annual report) | $9.22 per barrel (CRISIL Ratings, June 2026) |
| Crude throughput | 18.18 million tonnes, a company record (MRPL annual report) | About 17 million tonnes (CRISIL Ratings, June 2026) |
| Utilization | Not stated in the cited FY2024–25 figures | About 113% (CRISIL Ratings, June 2026) |
| Distillate yield | 81.93% (MRPL annual report) | Not stated in the cited FY2025–26 figures |
The comparison illustrates why a single operating statistic is not enough to judge results. Record throughput and high distillate yield can support output and product value, but they cannot shield a refinery from weak product spreads. Conversely, a stronger reported GRM may reflect both better market conditions and inventory effects.
Crude costs, inventory and currency risks
A change in crude prices alone does not tell an investor whether MRPL’s margin will improve. Crude can fall while product cracks weaken too; rapid price movements can also affect the value of crude and products held in inventory. The timing and direction of inventory gains or losses influence reported results. Foreign-exchange movements matter because CRISIL says around 80% of MRPL’s crude requirement is imported, exposing the company to currency as well as crude-price volatility.

Crude flexibility can help. MRPL’s FY2024–25 annual report describes processing a varied crude basket and says new grades added margin during the year. That is a potential operating advantage, not a guarantee that sourcing choices will offset weak market spreads or price volatility.
Earnings and financial context
The variation in margins appeared alongside a large change in annual profit. MRPL reported profit after tax of ₹51 crore in FY2024–25, compared with ₹3,596 crore in FY2023–24. CRISIL reported operating profit before depreciation, interest and tax of approximately ₹6,235 crore in FY2025–26, versus approximately ₹2,380 crore in FY2024–25. These figures use different measures—profit after tax and operating profit before depreciation, interest and tax—and should not be compared as though they were the same metric.

CRISIL identifies working-capital intensity as a monitorable because crude purchases, product inventories and price changes can affect funding needs. It also reports that ONGC owns an effective 88.58% stake in MRPL and describes the refinery as strategically important to the group. Parent-group backing is relevant context, but it does not remove the business’s exposure to refining margins, currency movements or working-capital requirements.

- Realistic Detail.
- Robust materials.
- Original packaging.
- Scale Miniature for For Model Trains and Dioramas.
- Product cracks: Look separately at diesel/HSD, ATF and petrol/MS rather than assuming all refined products move together.
- Reported GRM: Check the fiscal period and whether the figure reflects inventory gains or losses; do not compare it directly with a market benchmark unless definitions and inventory treatment match.
- Operations: Review throughput, utilization, distillate yield, maintenance and shutdown information, and operating efficiency.
- Feedstock and currency: Consider crude mix and sourcing alongside crude-price and foreign-exchange movements.
- Financial results: Read earnings, working-capital needs and debt in context, keeping distinct accounting measures separate.
