To reduce rainbow artifacts, first confirm that you are seeing brief colored flashes rather than persistent shimmer, then check your projector’s manual for a rainbow-effect reduction mode and try a reasonable viewing distance. There is no universal setting or distance that eliminates the effect: “triple laser” describes the light sources, not whether the projector displays colors sequentially.
First, identify which artifact you see
Rainbow effect (RBE) appears as brief colored flashes or fringes, often when your eyes move across a bright edge or high-contrast image. A bright subtitle against a dark scene can offer a useful troubleshooting clue, though it is not a controlled test.
Laser speckle looks more like persistent fine shimmer or grain across parts of the image. It is associated with coherent laser light interacting with the projection surface. The distinction matters: changing a screen may be worth investigating for speckle, but it is not an established fix for rainbow flashes.
Try these steps to reduce rainbow flashes

Check the exact model’s settings and manual
Look for a setting described as rainbow-effect reduction or similar, and enable it if your projector offers one. Such a mode exists on some models, but not all; follow the instructions in the manual for your exact model. Try a reasonable viewing distance
Nebula recommends this for its X1, but does not establish a universal distance or promise that moving back will eliminate RBE on other projectors. Use it as a low-cost experiment, not a guaranteed threshold. See Nebula’s X1 rainbow-effect FAQ.

Evaluate the effect under your usual viewing conditions
RBE visibility varies with the viewer and model. Check whether the flashes remain distracting during the kind of viewing that bothers you, rather than relying only on a “triple laser” or “RBE-free” label. If possible, view the exact model in person before replacing your projector.

Why a triple-laser projector can still show rainbows
“Triple laser” refers to red, green, and blue light sources. It does not establish how the projector forms each image. Many triple-laser projectors use a single DLP chip that displays color channels in sequence; the brief separation between those channels can appear as colored flashes, particularly during eye movement. RTINGS notes that even triple-laser models marketed as RBE-free can show some RBE when they use this single-chip sequential-color approach.
More frequent color cycling can make the separation less visible, but a specification or manufacturer claim is not a guarantee for every viewer. Nebula says the X1 sequences its red, green, and blue beams, lists a 240 Hz rate, and says the design is intended to reduce or eliminate visibility for most people. The same FAQ compares this with 60 Hz it describes as typical for DLP projectors; that comparison is Nebula’s product-page claim, not an independently verified industry statistic. Nebula also suggests eye tracking can make color layering visible.

Other architectures avoid the specific sequential-color mechanism: multi-chip DLP separates color channels across chips, while LCD displays the channels simultaneously. LG describes its wheel-less laser and LED technology as addressing conventional DLP rainbow effect and says the HU85LA uses separate RGB colors without a color wheel. These are architecture descriptions, not proof that every model is free of visible artifacts. Check the exact projector’s design and model-specific performance.
If you are considering a replacement
Compare the projector’s image-forming architecture and evidence for the exact model, rather than treating “triple laser” as a guarantee. A practical checklist:

- Architecture: Is it single-chip sequential-color DLP, multi-chip DLP, or LCD?
- Model-specific RBE evidence: Look for independent observations or tests of that model, not only marketing language such as “RBE-free.”
- Mitigation controls: Does it offer an RBE-reduction mode, and what does its manual say the mode does?
- Color sequencing: Check how the manufacturer describes its color-cycle performance, and treat a claimed rate as model-specific rather than a universal promise.
- Your own sensitivity: When possible, view the exact model under conditions similar to your room and check its return terms before buying.

Elite Screens says high-gain ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) surfaces can make speckle more noticeable and identifies matte white surfaces as an alternative. This is vendor guidance, not evidence that every matte white screen will reduce speckle with every projector. If you suspect persistent shimmer, test a different surface before replacing your screen and preserve the option to return it. This screen experiment is not a demonstrated remedy for rainbow flashes. What to expect
Complete removal is not assured. Nebula’s FAQ says, “The rainbow effect is unavoidable in tri-laser projectors,” while also describing a model-specific approach intended to reduce visibility for most people. Read that as a manufacturer’s broad statement alongside its product-specific mitigation claim—not as proof that every triple-laser projector behaves identically. RTINGS likewise emphasizes the role of projector architecture. There is no source-backed universal setting, viewing distance, or screen that guarantees RBE elimination across models.
