If you need to play now, compare gaming PCs and handhelds against the games you actually play and where you want to play them. If you can wait for Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix is intended to play both console and PC games—but its retail price, final specifications, and release timing have not been announced in the official material cited here.
What Microsoft has announced about Project Helix
At GDC on March 11, 2026, Microsoft announced Project Helix as the name for its next-generation Xbox project and said it is designed to play console and PC games. Xbox vice president of Next Generation Jason Ronald described the broader goal as reducing barriers between console and PC gaming and bringing Xbox’s gaming operating-system work into Windows. Microsoft also said Xbox mode, first introduced on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, would begin rolling out to Windows 11 in April in select markets. These are statements about product direction and software rollout, not a retail launch date, final specification sheet, or price. Microsoft’s GDC announcement
Microsoft and AMD have separately described a multiyear silicon co-engineering partnership spanning a portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud. Xbox has framed its future lineup as including console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. That points toward a more connected ecosystem, but does not establish that every device will share the same games, stores, or capabilities. Xbox’s AMD partnership announcement
Choose based on when and where you play
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Project Helix | You want Microsoft’s stated console-and-PC direction and are willing to wait for confirmed retail details. | Price, launch timing, final hardware, and how games and stores will work are not established by the cited announcement. |
| Gaming PC | You prioritize desktop flexibility and PC storefronts, and are comfortable choosing hardware to meet each game’s requirements. | You need to select compatible components and may also need a display, peripherals, storage, and other setup costs. |
| Handheld gaming PC | You want portable play and access to PC storefronts in a compact device. | Performance, battery life, controls, and compatibility depend on the device and game; some titles may need setup or settings changes. |
If you need a device now
Compare currently available gaming PCs and handhelds. A desktop PC is the natural fit for a desk-based setup and hardware flexibility; a handheld is for play away from a fixed setup, with the option to dock some models to a TV. The ROG Xbox Ally, for example, supports docked TV play, but that feature does not make its performance equivalent to a desktop PC or the future Project Helix. Xbox’s current handheld page

If you are willing to wait
Project Helix may be worth following if playing both console and PC games in Microsoft’s next-generation environment is appealing. Wait for confirmed information before making a purchase decision that depends on its cost, release date, or specific hardware capabilities.
Check your games, stores, and licenses
Write down the games you care about, where you own them, and whether you use a subscription. Then check the exact device and version required for each game. “Xbox game” does not automatically mean the same license works on a PC, and access can vary by title, store, region, device, and subscription plan.

Xbox says the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X provide access to Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts through an aggregated library. Players can play natively, use cloud gaming where available, or use Remote Play from an Xbox console at home. Cloud availability and catalog access depend on region, device, plan, and game. Xbox Play Anywhere carries progress and achievements across Xbox consoles, PC, the Ally where available, and other Windows handhelds—but only for supported games. Check a title’s eligibility rather than assuming cross-device continuity for your whole library. The Ally launch announcement also describes the Xbox Handheld Compatibility Program, with “Handheld Optimized” and “Mostly Compatible” labels and a performance-fit indicator. These are game- and device-specific signals, not a guarantee that every PC game will work well without adjustment.

Xbox games on PC: a limited example
On July 22, 2026, Xbox announced early PC release for four original Xbox games in supported regions: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Eligible existing digital licenses carried over to PC or handheld for those games; Xbox also said they were available to buy on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans at that announcement date. This is a limited initial set, not evidence that the complete Xbox back catalog works on Windows. Xbox’s PC backward-compatibility announcement
For that feature alone, Xbox listed minimum Windows 11 requirements of 8 GB RAM, 4 GB video memory, and a GPU at the level of an Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310. Recommended requirements were 16 GB RAM, 8 GB video memory, and GPUs including Radeon RX 6800S, GTX 1070 Ti, or Arc A770. Those figures apply to these backward-compatible games, not to modern PC games generally; check each game’s requirements.

Compare the handheld you would actually buy
Handheld specifications vary by model, so treat the ROG Xbox Ally as one example rather than a stand-in for all handhelds. The U.S. Microsoft Store listing accessed October 7, 2026, showed the base Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, 512 GB SSD, a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 60 Wh battery. That listing showed a starting price of $599.99 and out-of-stock status at the time accessed; price and availability can change. Microsoft Store’s U.S. ROG Xbox Ally listing
Xbox’s 2025 launch article described the Ally X with 1 TB storage, 24 GB high-speed memory, an 80 Wh battery, and a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. Xbox’s current handheld page also displays an ROG Xbox Ally X20 configuration; do not assume its specifications are the same as the 2025 Ally X. Check the live listing for the precise model and SKU you are considering.

A display refresh-rate figure is not a promise that every game will run at that rate. Actual results depend on the game, device, settings, and power mode. The cited sources do not provide a benchmark comparing these handhelds with a desktop graphics card or Project Helix.
Account for the whole setup, not just the main device
There is no like-for-like lifetime-cost comparison established here. Make your own list for the way you intend to play: include the PC or handheld, any display and peripherals you need, extra storage or a dock if useful and compatible, and subscriptions you plan to keep. For a gaming PC, the components determine which games and settings are practical; for a handheld, confirm the storage and accessories fit the exact model. Do not treat a subscription, cloud option, or cross-device feature as universally available.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Choose a gaming PC if desktop use, PC storefronts, and component flexibility matter more to you than portability.
- Choose a handheld if you want to play away from a desk and are comfortable checking game compatibility, performance, and battery trade-offs for a specific model.
- Wait for Project Helix details if Microsoft’s stated console-and-PC direction is the draw and your decision depends on information that has not yet been announced.
- Verify your library by checking each important game’s platform, store, license, compatibility, and cross-save support before choosing hardware.
- Compare complete setups using your real needs for storage, screen, peripherals, accessories, and recurring services rather than relying on an unsupported universal cost estimate.
