For the best combination of responsiveness and clear motion, enable your projector’s Game, Fast, or Low Latency mode; use a resolution and refresh rate supported by the specific projector and HDMI input; and disable processing such as keystone correction and frame interpolation when gaming. Then check the projector’s signal-information display to confirm the timing it is actually receiving. “240Hz” alone does not guarantee a particular input lag or mean every resolution supports that refresh rate.

Set up the low-latency signal first

  1. Use the correct HDMI input. Check the projector manual for port-specific requirements. For example, the Optoma UHZ55 manual says Enhanced Gaming mode is supported only on HDMI 1, and its 4ms figure at 1080p/240Hz requires that port and a suitable high-performance gaming PC and video card. Optoma UHZ55 user manual.
  2. Enable the projector’s gaming mode. Look for Game, Fast, Low Latency, or a manufacturer-specific Enhanced Gaming setting. Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), if available, can switch modes when it detects a gaming signal, but its presence alone does not confirm that the projector is using its lowest-lag path. BenQ’s manual says ALLM requires an HDMI source and Game or HDR-Game picture mode, and is disabled by default. BenQ projector user manual.
  3. Choose a supported output timing on the PC or console. For competitive PC gaming, try the projector’s highest supported 1080p refresh rate, including 240Hz if the exact model supports it. The source, HDMI port, and projector must all support the timing. RTINGS recommends matching the source output to what the projector can display; 1080p at 120Hz or the projector’s highest supported 1080p refresh may be a good smoothness-and-responsiveness option. RTINGS projector input-lag guide.
  4. Verify the incoming signal. Open the projector’s information or signal display and check the received resolution and refresh rate. A PC’s selected output is not enough to establish what the projector is receiving or displaying.
  5. Turn off processing that works against responsiveness. Disable keystone or auto-keystone, warping and other geometry correction, frame interpolation, and noise reduction if the low-latency mode has not already disabled them. These features can add processing, and some gaming modes restrict image adjustments.
  6. Test controls and image quality in your game. If the picture looks soft or shows motion artifacts, confirm the received timing and try a less processed signal path. If geometry correction is necessary, physically reposition or align the projector where practical; some modes reset keystone or disable geometry controls. BenQ projector user manual.

What 240Hz means—and what it does not

240Hz is a supported signal refresh timing, not a promise that a game will render 240 frames per second, that all resolutions work at 240Hz, or that end-to-end delay disappears. The source device, game frame rate, HDMI input, projector processing mode, and timing actually displayed all affect the result.

For example, Optoma describes the UHD35x as supporting 1080p/240Hz PC gaming and states 4.2ms input lag for that timing. Its product page also notes that some settings are disabled in Enhanced Gaming mode. These are manufacturer claims for that model, not general projector benchmarks. Optoma UHD35x product page.

Projector processing can include scaling, refresh conversion, tone mapping, dynamic contrast, noise reduction, interpolation, geometry correction, and pixel-shift processing. RTINGS discusses these as potential contributors to latency and recommends Game/Fast mode, avoiding unnecessary processing, enabling the appropriate HDMI bandwidth setting, and checking the active timing. It also cautions that projector support for 4K/120Hz may involve downscaling. RTINGS projector input-lag guide.

Turn off interpolation when responsiveness matters

Frame interpolation creates or processes frames to make motion look smoother in supported viewing modes. That processing is generally at odds with minimizing interactive delay, so prioritize the projector’s low-latency path and a supported high-refresh signal for gaming. Interpolation can also distort some scenes. JVC’s guide says Clear Motion Drive cannot be selected while Low Latency is on. JVC Low Latency and Clear Motion Drive guide.

Interpolation may still be useful for video or casual viewing when the projector allows it and responsiveness is not the priority. For games, a stable 1080p/240Hz signal may feel clearer and more responsive than a sharper mode that involves additional conversion or processing, but that is model- and source-dependent—not a universal measured rule. Compare exact modes, not headline specifications

When evaluating two modes or projectors, compare the complete signal path and restrictions rather than relying on a single “240Hz” label.

What to compare Why it matters
Supported resolution at each refresh rate Check 1080p/240Hz separately from 4K/60Hz or 4K/120Hz. A projector may support one timing but not another.
Input lag for the exact resolution and refresh Check the timing, HDMI port, and low-latency mode attached to the figure; do not treat a headline value as applying to every signal.
Gaming-mode restrictions Find out whether the mode disables keystone, zoom, aspect ratio, image shift, warping, or other setup controls.
Motion-processing availability Check whether interpolation and other image processing can remain enabled in the low-latency mode.
Source and connection capability Confirm that the PC or console and the HDMI cable path can send the required signal, then verify the timing in the projector’s information display.
