Before deciding, check what will transfer in your direction of travel, what may need manual setup, how your regular contacts communicate, and whether your carrier supports activating your number and eSIM on the new phone.
Start with the ecosystem you already use
List the devices and services you rely on every day: computer, tablet, smartwatch, cloud photo library, password manager, notes and messaging apps. Ask which ones you want to keep using together, and whether they work the way you need on the other platform. A phone that fits your existing routines may be a better choice than one with a feature advantage you rarely use.
Then identify what must follow you to the new phone. Separate essential information—such as contacts, photos, messages and files—from conveniences you can set up again. Make a separate note of paid apps, app data and subscriptions; moving a phone does not necessarily move purchases or every app’s internal data.
Check the transfer route for your direction
Official migration tools exist in both directions, but the available content depends on the setup flow, device and transfer method. Review the instructions for the exact phones you plan to use before you erase, return or trade in the old one.

Moving from Android to iPhone
Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad instructions use Move to iOS during the iPhone’s initial setup. The listed categories include contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history and calendars. Some free apps may be matched when they are available in both stores and supported by the transfer feature; that does not guarantee that every app or its data will come across.
Music, books and PDFs need to be transferred manually. The Move to iOS route is intended for initial setup. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple says you need to erase it to use that flow, or move content manually instead. An incomplete transfer or insufficient space can mean repeating the process, so check the destination’s available storage and allow the migration to finish before disconnecting devices.

Moving from iPhone to Android
Google’s Switch From iPhone to Android Seamlessly guide distinguishes classic Wi-Fi, classic cable and an upgraded Wi-Fi route. The data supported varies by route. The upgraded method’s feature list includes app data, call history, Google Account, files, selected-carrier eSIM, passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks and messages, among other items.
That upgraded method is available on select devices running Android 17 and is rolling out to more devices; Google describes availability on select Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices. Do not assume that a listed feature applies to every Android phone. Check Google’s current instructions for the exact model and setup route you will use.

WhatsApp transfer also depends on the route: Google’s guide says the upgraded flow transfers WhatsApp data separately after setup, while the classic setup flow requires a cable for WhatsApp chat transfer. Follow the prompts for your specific devices rather than assuming a generic wireless or cable procedure will cover every item.
Separate app installation from app continuity
Getting an app onto the new phone is not the same as bringing its data, purchase or subscription with it. Google says app-data transfer requires developers to use APIs made available by Google and Apple. Available free apps may transfer, but purchased iPhone apps may require contacting the developer. Subscriptions remain billed through their existing developer or App Store arrangement.

Before switching, check the app publisher’s instructions for anything you cannot afford to lose—especially authenticator accounts, saved projects, game progress or locally stored files. Confirm how to sign in on the new platform and whether a subscription can be accessed there without changing its billing. Do not cancel an existing subscription until you understand how it is managed and whether you still need it.

Ask the people you message most often which services they use. iMessage is an Apple-device service with end-to-end encryption, but conversations with people on other platforms may use RCS or SMS/MMS instead. The features and privacy protections depend on the actual conversation, not just the phone you buy.

Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 and a messaging plan from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone. RCS can support high-resolution photos and videos, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS (beta) requires iOS 26.5 and a provider that supports encryption; the other person’s provider must support it too. Look for the lock or “Encrypted” indicator in the conversation. Without it, Apple says the RCS conversation is not protected from a third party reading messages in transit. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. See Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS.
Availability is changing. In a May 11, 2026 announcement, Google said encrypted RCS was beginning to roll out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google said encryption is enabled by default and would be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations. Treat that as a rollout announcement, not a guarantee for every device, carrier or chat; check the lock indicator in the conversation you care about.
Verify your number and eSIM before switching
Number and eSIM activation can depend on your carrier and the exact phone. Apple says an Android phone number and SIM/eSIM can be activated on iPhone, though activation may send you to the carrier. Google says automatic eSIM transfer is carrier-dependent and advises contacting the carrier when it is unsupported.
Before wiping, returning or trading in the old device, ask your carrier whether your specific new model supports activation or transfer, what steps are required, and whether you need a physical SIM or carrier assistance. Keep the old phone available until calls, texts and mobile data work on the new one.
Use a decision checklist, then compare specific phones
- Map your routine: note the devices, services and messaging groups you rely on, and which ones you want to keep integrated.
- Prioritize what must move: list essential photos, messages, files, app data and accounts, then check the official transfer instructions for your direction and exact device.
- Audit purchases and subscriptions: verify app availability, data recovery, sign-in and billing arrangements with the relevant developers or service providers.
- Check messaging with your regular contacts: establish whether conversations will use iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS, and verify encryption in the actual chat where it matters.
- Confirm carrier activation: check phone-number and eSIM support for the exact model before giving up the old phone.
- Compare handset models: once the ecosystem fit is clear, weigh current price, hardware, accessibility needs and the software-support commitment for the particular phones under consideration.
There is no universal iOS or Android winner established by transfer and messaging guidance alone. This comparison does not establish model-level prices, camera rankings or update lifetimes; those require current, phone-by-phone information.
