If you collect original PlayStation hardware or want a nostalgic centerpiece, LEGO PlayStation set 72306 is the clearest fit. It is an 18+ display replica of the original console, with a plug-in controller, working Open and Power buttons, and hidden scenes inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. If you care more about characters, vehicles, or building a game world, another LEGO gaming set may suit your collection better.
What LEGO PlayStation set 72306 includes
LEGO lists set 72306 for ages 18+ and gives it 1,911 pieces. The replica measures about 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. It is designed for display, not as a playable game console. Its controller plugs into the console, and its Open and Power buttons function as interactive details. Opening the console reveals small buildable scenes inspired by Gran Turismo (released in 1997) and Ape Escape (released in 1999); the scenes can also be removed and displayed beside it. LEGO’s product listing showed a US price of $179.99 when accessed. LEGO’s September 2026 announcement gave launch prices of $179.99 in the US, £139.99 in the UK, and €159.99 in the EU, with general release on October 4, 2026. Prices and availability can change; check LEGO or local retailers for current terms.
How the main alternatives compare
The most useful distinction is what you want to collect: retro hardware, a character or vehicle, or a setting for play. These options differ in audience and format, so piece count alone will not tell you which is the better fit.
| Set or theme | Best fit | Audience and format | Price or specification evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| LEGO PlayStation 72306 | Original PlayStation nostalgia and retro-hardware display | 18+, 1,911 pieces; console replica with controller and concealed scenes | US $179.99 on LEGO’s product page when accessed; UK £139.99 and EU €159.99 at launch, per LEGO’s September 2026 announcement |
| Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart | Mario Kart fans who want a vehicle display | 18+, 1,972 pieces; adult display model | US $169.99 in LEGO’s gamer guide |
| LEGO Horizon Adventures: Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth (77037) | Horizon fans who want characters and buildable machines | 9+; two buildable machines with play features | Price varies by market; see LEGO’s Horizon page for model information |
| LEGO Fortnite | Fortnite fans choosing between playsets and adult display builds | Theme includes children’s playsets and adult display models | Varies by individual set; see LEGO’s Fortnite theme page |
| LEGO Super Mario, Minecraft, Sonic, or Animal Crossing | Collectors who prefer those game worlds, characters, or settings | Multiple formats and age ranges; compare individual sets | Varies by individual set; see LEGO’s gaming themes |
Choose by the kind of collection you want
Pick PlayStation for a console-focused display
Choose 72306 if the original PlayStation itself is the point of the build: it recreates recognizable hardware and adds small game-inspired scenes. It makes more sense as a display object than as a substitute for a character set or a play environment.

What to check before buying
- Franchise: Is your collection about original PlayStation hardware, Mario Kart, Horizon, or another game world?
- Display goal: Do you want a console replica, a character or vehicle, or a scene built for play?
- Age and format: The PlayStation and Mario Kart display builds are 18+; the Horizon set is 9+. Check the age guidance on the individual LEGO listing.
- Space: The PlayStation model is about 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Compare the footprint with your available shelf space.
- Budget: Treat listed prices as market- and date-specific. Compare current local pricing rather than relying on a launch price or an older guide.
- Build expectations: Piece count is not a reliable measure of build time, difficulty, or value. The available product information does not establish that one of these sets builds better than another.
Upcoming Super Mario sets are a future option
LEGO announced a Super Mario refresh with minifigure-based roleplay sets, including Mario and Luigi characters, karts, and environments. LEGO said the sets were planned to reach LEGO.com, LEGO stores, and select retailers from January 1, 2027. That is a planned availability date, not evidence that the sets are currently released; check LEGO’s announcement for updates. LEGO Design Manager Patrick Otley described the announcement as “an amazing celebration of our partnership with Nintendo,” and said bringing Super Mario to LEGO minifigure form “feels like the start of something special.”
