No—not by itself. ReShade is a general-purpose post-processing injector, while NVIDIA DLSS is a game-integrated rendering feature that depends on information and setup supplied by the game. A ReShade preset can alter or scale an image, but that does not make it DLSS.

What ReShade does

ReShade describes itself as “a generic post-processing injector for games and video software developed by crosire.” It can access frame color and depth information exposed by a game and apply effects such as ambient occlusion, depth of field, color correction, and SMAA. Those effects modify image data in the rendering pipeline; they do not, on their own, add a separate game-rendering technology. ReShade’s official site describes its role and supported APIs.

Why DLSS needs game integration

NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution is a neural-rendering feature that uses RTX Tensor Cores. A game must provide the information and implementation DLSS needs, rather than simply hand over a finished frame. NVIDIA’s integration guidance covers a game-specific application ID, motion vectors, exposure and jitter handling, DLSS mode selection or dynamic-resolution support, and packaging the production DLSS library. It also places DLSS at or near the beginning of post-processing. See NVIDIA’s DLSS getting-started guidance and DLSS Programming Guide.

That is why installing ReShade does not supply the game-side implementation or rendering inputs required for DLSS. An RTX graphics card alone cannot add DLSS to a game that was not built to support it.

What generic upscaling tools actually do

“Upscaling” broadly means producing a larger output from a smaller input. Tools can do this in different ways. A post-processing filter that receives an image may sharpen it, apply other visual changes, or scale it to a larger output. That can affect appearance or resolution, but it is not the same as DLSS’s game-integrated neural reconstruction using rendering data such as motion vectors.

Question Generic post-processing, such as ReShade Game-integrated DLSS
Where does it operate? On frame information the game exposes for post-processing. Within a game implementation that supplies DLSS with required rendering inputs.
What can it change? Image appearance and, depending on the effect, output scaling. Reconstructs an output using DLSS and game-provided data.
Does a preset install DLSS? No. No preset is a substitute for the game’s DLSS integration.
What should you verify? Compatibility with the specific game, graphics API, and configuration. Whether the game itself supports DLSS and exposes its settings.

When a ReShade add-on may be an exception

ReShade’s add-on API allows developers to extend ReShade and build game-specific add-ons. That is distinct from installing an ordinary shader preset, and it can enable specialized behavior for a particular game. It does not establish that any add-on can retrofit DLSS into any game. The official ReShade project describes the framework and add-on API.

A forum discussion describes LUMA as adding DLSS and HDR for a particular game through a ReShade add-on. Treat that as a report about that project and game—not proof that standard ReShade use can add DLSS universally. The same discussion includes a Linux/Proton compatibility report, which is specific to that setup. See the discussion referenced in the report.

How to tell whether a game is using real DLSS

  • Check the game’s own settings or official documentation. Look for an explicit DLSS option for the relevant game.
  • Separate image effects from rendering features. A sharper image, higher output resolution, or ReShade preset is not evidence of DLSS.
  • Check the exact add-on and game. If DLSS is attributed to a ReShade add-on, confirm that the claim concerns that named project, game, graphics API, and configuration.
  • Do not infer support from hardware alone. DLSS capability on a graphics card does not supply a missing game integration.

Can you use ReShade alongside DLSS?

Potentially, if the game already supports DLSS, but compatibility depends on the particular game and configuration. ReShade and DLSS operate at different points and in different roles in the rendering process, so one should not be assumed to work with every DLSS-enabled game or setup. Check compatibility information for the specific game and any add-ons you use.
