To adjust an electromagnetic brake’s air gap, identify the exact brake model, follow its current manufacturer manual, measure the gap with the specified gauge, and use only the adjustment hardware and torque that manual specifies. There is no universal target gap or adjustment direction: settings and procedures vary by brake design, size, and version.

Find the correct specification before adjusting

Use the brake and motor nameplates to identify the manufacturer, model, size, and version, then locate the applicable manual and revision. The manual must provide the target and maximum gap, measurement points, adjustment method, fastener torque, safety steps, and required checks. If any of these are unclear, ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified brake-service technician rather than applying another model’s procedure.

Manufacturer examples show why guessing is unsafe. Neri Motori’s AC brake table lists nominal gaps from 0.20 to 0.40 mm and maximum gaps from 0.40 to 0.60 mm across the frames shown on its page. Its separate DC brake table lists nominal gaps from 0.15 to 0.60 mm and maximum values from 0.50 to 1.00 mm where specified. These are specifications for the listed Neri designs, not general settings for electromagnetic brakes. See Neri Motori’s AC brake specifications and Neri Motori’s DC brake specifications.

Prepare the brake for safe measurement

Air-gap adjustment is maintenance on equipment that may start unexpectedly or move under load. Follow the machine maker’s isolation and safe-work procedures before opening the brake. Siemens’ safety-related brake instructions call for switching off the drive power supply, establishing a no-voltage condition, preventing unintended startup, and posting a warning at the start switch. WEG’s instructions call for disconnecting the motor, accessories, and brake from power. Apply the requirements for your equipment, not a shortened version of another manufacturer’s procedure. Siemens’ August 2024 operating instructions and WEG’s brake-motor manual describe their respective procedures.

Remove only the covers or release hardware identified in the manual. Keep oil and grease off friction surfaces: Siemens warns that contamination can reduce braking effect. Do not begin with energized or moving machinery, and confirm the brake is in the torque-free state specified by its manual.

Measure the gap at the specified points

  1. Use a metric feeler gauge or thickness gauge suitable for the gap range and resolution specified by the manual.
  2. Place the gauge between the exact surfaces and at each measurement point the manual identifies. Do not assume the measurement location is the same across brake designs.
  3. Compare each reading with the model’s nominal and maximum permitted values. If the manual requires a uniform gap, check that readings at all required points meet that requirement.

WEG and Neri Motori specify feeler or thickness gauges in the procedures cited above. A gauge is a measuring tool, not a substitute for a model-specific specification.

Adjust only with the documented hardware and method

If measurements show adjustment is needed, use only the adjusters named in the applicable manual, and follow its sequence, direction, and torque values. Brake designs do not share interchangeable adjustment methods.

Manufacturer and brake example Adjustment method described What to keep specific to that design
WEG brake motors Procedures differ by brake size and use sleeve bolts and fixing bolts. The manual separates sizes 6–25 from sizes 25 and 31. For sizes 25 and 31, it states that a quarter-turn reduces the gap by approximately 0.45 mm; this rate is not transferable to other sizes or brands. WEG instruction manual.
Neri Motori AC brake Holding screws and nuts; check the gap with a thickness gauge. Use the AC table’s Snom and Smax values for the listed frame. Neri Motori AC brake.
Neri Motori DC brake Threaded bushes; check the gap with a thickness gauge. This is a separate DC design; do not apply the AC target values or method. Neri Motori DC brake.
Siemens safety-related brake Loosen brake fastening screws, adjust sleeve screws, then tighten fasteners and check with a feeler gauge. Follow the manual’s own adjustment sequence, gap table, and safety conditions. Siemens operating instructions.

The cited manuals do not establish one shared tightening torque, screw direction, or adjustment increment. Obtain those details from the exact brake documentation rather than inferring them from the table.

Remeasure, inspect, and complete the manual’s checks

  1. Tighten the adjustment hardware to the specified torque and remeasure at all required points. Repeat the adjustment only as the manual directs.
  2. Check related wear limits and replace components that have reached their stated limits. WEG calls for checking disc thickness during maintenance on its larger brake sizes; do not try to compensate for a worn part by exceeding the permitted gap adjustment.
  3. Restore seals, covers, fan, and manual-release parts as specified in the manual.
  4. Perform the prescribed brake-function, release-dimension, or commissioning checks before returning the equipment to service. Siemens includes brake-function and release-dimension checks in its procedure.

When to service the brake

Do not assume a universal inspection interval. WEG says the interval depends on load, service conditions, and wear, with the installation’s maintenance department determining the schedule. Use the applicable manual and the equipment’s operating conditions to set inspections.
