Executives should review strategy on a recurring schedule—often monthly for a focused strategy discussion, quarterly for a deeper checkpoint, and annually for a broader reassessment—while calling an extra review when important assumptions or external conditions change. This is a practical starting rhythm, not a proven universal optimum: the right cadence depends on the organization, the decision at hand, and how quickly useful evidence becomes available.
Why one review cadence is not right for every organization
No established evidence sets a universally best frequency for executive strategy reviews. The monthly, quarterly, and annual pattern described here comes from management frameworks and practitioner guidance, not a comparative study showing that this schedule works best for every company.
Think of the cadence as a way to protect time for strategic learning—not as a rule that every organization must follow. The frequency should fit the purpose of the meeting, the pace of change, and the time it takes strategic initiatives to produce meaningful evidence.
A practical rhythm: monthly, quarterly, and annually

Monthly: keep strategy out of operational firefighting
Robert S. Kaplan, Harvard Business School professor emeritus, recommends that senior management hold regular, “probably monthly,” meetings focused only on strategy. That is a practitioner recommendation, not a universal standard. Use the time to examine strategic progress, test assumptions, surface cross-functional barriers, and make decisions that routine operating meetings may not leave room for. Quarterly: look across trends and test the direction
A quarterly checkpoint can provide a broader view of whether strategic initiatives and resource commitments are moving in the intended direction. In their Balanced Scorecard example, Kaplan and Norton distinguish monthly reviews from quarterly sessions that put greater emphasis on strategic issues. Annually: make room for a deeper reassessment
Use an annual review to revisit the longer-range plan and strategic issues deliberately, rather than treating the yearly planning event as the only time strategy can change. When triggered: do not wait for the next scheduled meeting
Convene sooner when external circumstances materially shift, a critical assumption is contradicted, leading indicators and outcomes diverge, or new customer, competitor, or capability information puts the current direction in doubt. Kaplan argues that leaders should welcome fact-based challenges to existing strategies and describes using external circumstances, performance data, and employee suggestions to challenge a strategy. Keep strategy reviews separate from operational reviews
Operational meetings focus on near-term execution and correction; strategy reviews ask whether the organization is pursuing the right direction and whether its assumptions still hold. Combining them can allow urgent operational issues to crowd out strategic learning. Routine operational monitoring can happen more frequently than strategic review. The key is to give each forum its own purpose, agenda, information, and participants, rather than expecting an operating update to do both jobs.
What executives should examine
A strategy review should test whether the assumptions behind the strategy remain credible and whether the intended drivers are producing expected outcomes. The Balanced Scorecard’s feedback-and-learning process is described as gathering feedback, testing the hypotheses on which a strategy is based, and making necessary adjustments. Bring together evidence that can reveal both execution progress and the health of the strategy:
- Strategic objectives and milestones: Are major initiatives advancing as intended?
- Leading measures and outcomes: Are the drivers expected to produce results moving in the right direction, and are financial outcomes consistent with that expectation?
- Customers and markets: Is customer evidence consistent with the value proposition and assumptions about the market?
- Critical processes and capabilities: Are the processes, talent, and other capabilities required by the strategy available and performing?
- External changes: Have conditions shifted in ways that challenge assumptions about customers, competitors, or the environment?
- Resource allocation: Do current commitments still support the strategic priorities?
For board discussions, include forward-looking strategic information rather than relying on historical financial statements alone. How to decide whether strategy should change
End each review with an explicit choice. A missed target is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof that the strategy is wrong. First determine whether execution delivered the intended drivers; then assess whether the causal assumptions linking those drivers to outcomes remain credible.
- Reaffirm the strategy when the assumptions remain credible and the evidence supports the current direction.
- Refine execution when the direction still fits but targets, measures, sequencing, or resource commitments need adjustment.
- Revisit the strategy when credible evidence challenges its underlying assumptions about markets, customers, competitors, or internal capabilities.

How to adapt the cadence to your organization
Choose the interval by considering the conditions around the strategy and the purpose of the review. The sources support tailoring meeting frequency to its goal, but do not set numerical thresholds for any of these factors.
