The Samsung HW-S60D is a practical 5.0 all-in-one with room to expand; the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is the clearest compact pick here for physical up-firing Atmos drivers; and the JBL Bar 300MK2 keeps everything in one bar but virtualizes Atmos. The Polk Signa S4 is a different kind of option: it includes a wireless subwoofer, which improves bass potential but takes up extra space.
How to choose a compact Beam alternative
Start with the space around your TV, not the Atmos badge. Check the bar’s width and height against the shelf or TV stand, and consider whether you can accommodate a separate subwoofer. Then check your TV’s audio outputs and the features you will actually use, such as streaming, voice control, or future surround expansion.
- For a one-piece setup: look at the Samsung HW-S60D or JBL Bar 300MK2.
- For physical height-channel hardware in a small bar: consider the Bose Smart Soundbar 600, subject to current availability and model naming.
- For a bundled subwoofer: the Polk Signa S4 includes one, but it needs its own place.
- For a more expandable Samsung system: the HW-S60D can be paired with separately purchased compatible subwoofer and satellite speakers.
Best compact alternatives to the Sonos Beam (Gen 2)
Samsung HW-S60D: an expandable 5.0 all-in-one
Samsung describes the HW-S60D as a 5.0-channel all-in-one soundbar with wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony. RTINGS measures its width at 27 inches and highlights its versatility and customization. That makes it a sensible fit when you want a single bar now but may want to add a subwoofer or dedicated satellites later; those components are separate purchases. Samsung’s US product page displayed $399.99 when checked on October 7, 2026, but that is a time-sensitive listing, not a lasting price guarantee. Bose Smart Soundbar 600: compact bar with up-firing drivers
RTINGS identifies the Bose Smart Soundbar as its best small soundbar for Dolby Atmos and says its up-firing drivers reflect sound off the ceiling to reproduce height information. Its small-soundbar roundup describes the bar as under 28 inches wide. That is a meaningful hardware distinction from bars that create Atmos effects virtually, though room and ceiling conditions affect what you hear. RTINGS’ comparison with the Beam says both are compact smart Atmos bars, while it favors the Beam for stereo soundstage and DTS support. Bose’s specifications page is indexed as a 2022–2024 product, so confirm that the 600 model is available in your market and distinguish it from newer Bose Smart Soundbar naming before buying. JBL Bar 300MK2: one bar, with virtual Atmos
The JBL Bar 300MK2 is a 5.0 design for buyers who want a self-contained bar rather than a separate subwoofer. What Hi-Fi reports that neither this JBL nor the Beam Gen 2 has up-firing speakers, so both render Dolby Atmos virtually. Its review praises the JBL’s room-filling, exciting presentation but prefers the Beam’s more controlled, precise sound. Choose it if you value the JBL’s character and a one-bar setup; do not assume its Atmos implementation uses physical height drivers. What Hi-Fi JBL Bar 300MK2 review
Polk Signa S4: included subwoofer, larger system footprint
Polk lists the Signa S4 as a 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos system with a wireless subwoofer, VoiceAdjust dialogue feature, and HDMI eARC/ARC, optical, and auxiliary connections. The subwoofer may suit a buyer who wants included bass hardware, but it is a less direct Beam replacement if floor or shelf space is tight. Polk’s page displayed $336 against a $449 reference price on October 7, 2026; the displayed promotion may change. Polk Signa S4 product page

Marshall Heston 60 and Sony HT-S2000: shortlist only if dimensions work
Tom’s Guide includes Marshall Heston 60 among the Beam Gen 2’s competitors and notes that it lacks voice-assistant support. Its Atmos and DTS:X positioning may make it worth investigating, but the available evidence does not establish the current dimensions, price, or availability needed to recommend it as a compact-space fit. Tom’s Guide also lists Sony HT-S2000 as an Atmos competitor, while describing it as notably less compact than the Marshall. Consider the Sony only if you are willing to trade a smaller footprint for a larger bar. Tom’s Guide Marshall Heston 60 review
What Dolby Atmos means in a compact soundbar
Atmos support does not mean every soundbar creates the same height effect. A bar with up-firing drivers directs sound toward the ceiling to reflect it toward the listening position; virtual Atmos processing attempts to suggest height effects without those drivers. In this comparison, RTINGS describes the Bose 600 as having up-firing drivers, while What Hi-Fi says the JBL Bar 300MK2 and Beam Gen 2 lack them and use virtual Atmos. The label alone does not tell you which hardware is present.

Your TV connection matters too. Sonos says Beam Gen 2 needs a compatible TV and HDMI eARC or HDMI ARC for Atmos home-theater content. Check the television’s manual and audio-output settings, including the supported output format, rather than relying only on the soundbar’s logo. Sonos notes that an optical adapter can connect the Beam to an optical-only TV, but that adapter should not be treated as an Atmos enabler. Sonos TV requirements for home theater products

Which alternative makes sense for an apartment without a subwoofer?
If avoiding an extra box is the priority, focus on the Samsung HW-S60D and JBL Bar 300MK2: both are identified as all-in-one or 5.0 designs, while the Polk includes a separate wireless subwoofer. The Bose 600 is also physically compact, but the cited sources do not establish its full bass performance or bundled-subwoofer configuration. A one-piece bar saves floor space; it does not make every option equivalent in bass, height effects, or dialogue features. Use the TV’s ports, bar clearance, and the soundbar’s specific hardware to narrow the choice.
