An electromagnetic brake that will not release usually has a problem in its power supply or wiring, rectifier, coil, or mechanical clearance. Check those causes in that order—but use the installed brake’s model documentation for every voltage, resistance, air-gap limit, and repair procedure. These brakes can hold a load; do not treat a hand release or an electrical test as proof that the equipment is safe.

How a spring-applied electromagnetic brake releases

On a common spring-applied design, interrupting power lets a spring press the brake disc and apply braking force. Energizing the coil creates a magnetic field that restrains the armature and releases the brake. Neri Motori describes this arrangement in its overview of an electromagnetic brake in AC and DC applications. Confirm that this description matches the brake installed on your equipment; designs and control arrangements vary.

Before troubleshooting: identify the brake and make the equipment safe

Find the brake and motor model, read the nameplate, and obtain the current manual for that exact unit. Do not borrow a voltage, coil-resistance value, rectifier rating, air-gap setting, or adjustment procedure from another brake family.

Follow applicable site electrical and machinery-safety procedures before inspection. Secure the equipment and any suspended or otherwise hazardous load using the site’s approved method. A brake that has been released manually or electrically is not evidence that the load is safe. KEB’s COMBISTOP Type 38 manual directs users to follow relevant safety guidelines before troubleshooting.

Live electrical measurements can expose a technician to hazardous voltage and unexpected movement. Make them only if you are qualified, the exact manual permits the procedure, and the equipment has been secured as required. Never bypass controls or improvise wiring to test whether the brake releases.

Diagnose the no-release fault in order

  1. Check the specified supply and wiring

Compare the installed supply, connections, and wiring diagram with the brake and rectifier documentation. Look for absent or incorrect supply, loose or damaged wiring, and cable faults. INTORQ and KEB both identify supply or wiring problems among possible causes of a brake that does not release. If the brake uses a microswitch, check its wiring and setting only as directed by the manual for that version.

  2. Check rectifier input and output

If the model’s procedure allows it and you are qualified to work on energized equipment, check the rectifier’s DC output against the rating for the installed brake and rectifier. INTORQ’s BFK458 operating instructions direct technicians to check DC voltage and, if it is zero, check AC input and the supply or wiring. Use the exact manual’s expected values: there is no universal voltage reading for all electromagnetic brakes.

A failed or incorrectly selected rectifier can resemble a brake fault. Before replacing one, confirm its compatibility and investigate the coil as well; a coil fault that appears after heating can contribute to a recurring rectifier problem.

    • Compact Size: Designed with a small footprint, allowing for easy installation into various systems without taking up excessive space.
    • Low Maintenance: Due to its simple and robust design, this power - off brake requires minimal maintenance, saving you time and costs in the long run.
  3. Check the coil for an open winding or damage

With the equipment made safe and following the model-specific procedure, measure coil resistance and compare it with the brake’s rated value. INTORQ’s instructions identify an open winding, high resistance, or a short to ground as signs of coil damage; the stated resistance must come from the documentation for the installed unit. Do not substitute a generic value or assume that a reading alone identifies every intermittent fault.

  4. Inspect the air gap, friction parts, and mechanical freedom

Once the equipment is safe for inspection, check the air gap and moving parts as the brake manual specifies. An excessive air gap can prevent release. KEB also lists foreign material between the armature and lining; its troubleshooting guidance calls for adjusting the gap or replacing the lining when the maximum permitted gap has been reached. Measure and adjust only to the manufacturer’s limits. Do not use a generic target gap.

If the gap is within specification, but the armature or other parts bind, or the lining is worn or contaminated, follow the manufacturer’s inspection and replacement procedure. Do not force the mechanism or fit unapproved parts.

  5. Escalate unresolved or recurring faults

Stop and contact qualified manufacturer service if the cause remains unclear, the fault returns, or coil, electronics, lining-carrier, or brake-assembly replacement is indicated. SEW-EURODRIVE’s brake-malfunctions guidance directs specified brake repairs and replacements to its service team or a trained specialist. KEB likewise advises contacting support when troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you

Possible cause What to verify What to do next
No or incorrect supply; wiring or cable fault Specified supply, wiring diagram, connections, and cable condition for the installed unit Correct faults only under the approved site and manufacturer procedures.
Rectifier fault or mismatch Model-rated DC output and, if DC is zero, AC input and supply path, when permitted by the manual Verify the brake coil and rectifier compatibility before replacement.
Open or damaged coil Coil resistance against the installed brake’s rated value; winding continuity and ground fault per the manual Use manufacturer-approved repair or service; do not rely on a generic resistance value.
Excessive air gap, debris, wear, or binding Manufacturer’s air-gap limit, lining condition, contamination, and mechanical freedom Clean, adjust, or replace parts only as specified for that brake.
Microswitch issue on applicable versions Whether the brake has that microswitch, plus its wiring and setting under the model procedure Do not apply this check to a brake without the relevant switch.

Tools and replacement parts: use model-specific specifications

A digital multimeter is useful for qualified technicians because the INTORQ troubleshooting procedure calls for rectifier-voltage and coil-resistance checks. It is not a reason to perform live testing without the training, authorization, and safety controls required for the equipment. A feeler-gauge set may be appropriate when the exact brake procedure calls for an air-gap measurement; the required range depends on the model.

Rectifiers, coils or stators, brake electronics, lining carriers, and complete brake assemblies are not interchangeable by appearance. Identify the exact brake and confirm part compatibility before ordering or replacing anything. A model-specific NORD instruction also says its rectifier should be supplied from a separate source rather than an inverter output because that output varies; this is not a general rule for every brake. Confirm current NORD documentation and the installed control design before applying it.
