For routine dust, steady the LEGO model with one hand and lift dust gently with a clean, soft cloth, working around delicate projections instead of dragging across them. This is cautious practical advice for assembled models; LEGO’s official cleaning guidance covers individual bricks and pieces, not a tested dusting method for a complete display model.
How do you dust and clean a LEGO model without loosening pieces?
For routine dust: clean the assembled model gently
- Choose a clean, soft cloth. A soft microfiber cloth is one option, but LEGO does not specifically recommend microfiber; any clean, suitably soft cloth you already have may work.
- Support the model. Hold a stable section while you work so the model does not shift as you clean it.
- Lift dust in small, gentle passes. Move around delicate projections and small attachments rather than pulling or wiping across them. Avoid pressing hard or catching the cloth on protruding pieces.
This approach is a cautious application of gentle cleaning to an assembled display model, not a technique tested or prescribed by LEGO. The company’s official care guidance recommends a soft cloth or sponge for hand-cleaning LEGO bricks and pieces.
For grime: distinguish the built model from loose pieces
LEGO’s washing instructions are for bricks and pieces; they do not say to immerse an assembled model. If grime requires washing, the guidance is to hand-clean pieces with water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent may be added, and pieces should be rinsed well with clear water afterward.
For a model that is still assembled, do not treat that advice as permission to soak the build. If washing is necessary, consider whether pieces can be separated safely and cleaned individually, keeping track of small parts as you go.

How should sensitive or electronic LEGO pieces be cleaned?
For electronic components and other sensitive or metal-containing pieces, LEGO advises wiping with a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. This is a wipe-clean instruction, not permission to soak those pieces.
What cleaning methods should you avoid?
LEGO says not to use a washing machine or dishwasher. It also warns against drying pieces in an oven, microwave, or hair dryer, and against leaving them to dry in direct sunlight: excessive heat can deform bricks so they may no longer work properly. The official care page does not state a drying-time figure.
