Why does Lidl sell so many own-brand products?
Lidl says it curates its assortment rather than carrying countless brands in each category, and works with vendors to develop products for its stores. Its global proposition emphasizes quality, price leadership, simplicity, responsibility, and supplier partnerships. A retailer commissioning its own-label goods can shape specifications, packaging, assortment, and supplier relationships directly; Lidl presents that approach as part of its model, but the available company statements do not establish how much it saves per item or prove that own-label products are inherently better.
Lidl also attributes low prices in the US to operating choices such as keeping overhead low, asking shoppers to bring bags, and placing products on shelves in delivery boxes to reduce restocking time. These are Lidl’s explanations of its model, not an independent analysis of its costs. ( Lidl US)
Are Lidl own-brand products good value?
They may be, but value depends on the particular product and on what matters to you. Lidl US says around 80% of its products are private label and that its private-label items undergo taste, quality, and sensory testing. The reviewed sources do not establish a current, comparable grocery basket showing Lidl is always the cheapest. A low shelf price alone may not make an item the best fit if pack sizes differ, the ingredients do not suit you, or you prefer another product.
How to compare an own-label product with a brand
- Compare unit prices and pack sizes. Use the price per comparable weight, volume, or count rather than shelf price alone.
- Check the product itself. Compare ingredients, nutrition, dietary suitability, and relevant specifications—not just the brand name.
- Look at origin and certifications. Check the label on the specific item; a retailer-wide sourcing statement does not establish where every product comes from.
- Consider availability and promotions. Distinguish permanent lines from limited-time or seasonal items, and factor in any promotion.
- Decide how much choice matters. A focused range may be convenient, but it may not offer the familiar brand or breadth of alternatives you want.
Are Lidl products locally sourced?
Some are, but origin depends on the product and national market. Lidl US says it works with local and regional farms and suppliers while also offering imported specialties, so its statement does not mean every item is locally sourced. Lidl Great Britain reported that two-thirds of its products came from British suppliers during the financial year ending 28 February 2025. It also said that 100% of its fresh everyday own-label beef, pork, chicken, milk, butter, cream, and eggs came from British suppliers. Those claims apply to Lidl GB, the stated reporting period, and the categories specified—not to Lidl in other countries or every product sold in Britain. (Lidl GB)
What Lidl’s named ranges and initiatives tell shoppers
Vemondo plant-based products
Lidl reports around 1,000 plant-based items globally, including more than 650 alternatives under its Vemondo brand. The company says most national companies offer vegan products under Vemondo, while some countries may include vegetarian products too. Fairtrade Living Income Program tablet chocolate
In March 2026, Lidl said it moved its permanent-listing private-label tablet chocolate assortment in five countries to the Fairtrade Living Income Program. Lidl says the change is intended to help close the income gap for cocoa farmers in participating cooperatives in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire while keeping chocolate affordable. The announcement does not cover all Lidl chocolate, seasonal or promotional products, or every country. (Lidl corporate)

Lidl’s private-label mix, suppliers, assortment, and products are not interchangeable across its national businesses. For example, the US private-label share and sourcing description are US-specific, while the British-supplier figures describe Lidl GB’s financial year ending 28 February 2025. Check your local Lidl site and the product’s own label rather than assuming the same recipe, origin, price, or availability in every market.

Company-level figures can also use different snapshots or definitions. Lidl’s global overview reports around 13,000 stores in 32 countries, while Lidl US gives a footprint of 31 countries; these should not be combined or treated as a single fixed count. The global overview also reports around 3,700 core-assortment products and €140.2 billion in store revenue for fiscal year 2025. Lidl GB reported 38 million more customer visits year over year and £11.7 billion in turnover, up 7.9%, for the financial year ending 28 February 2025. Lidl’s own-label focus is a defining part of its value model: it offers a curated assortment of products made for the retailer, alongside fewer national-brand choices in some categories. Whether that works for you comes down to the item in front of you.
