There is no verified overall winner between the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro and the original Snapdragon 8 Elite. MediaTek’s 9600 Pro is the newer platform, announced in 2026, and its specifications list newer memory and storage support. But the available benchmark comparison is against Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5—not the original 8 Elite—and no matched retail-phone test establishes which of these two exact chips is faster, cooler, or more efficient in use. For a buying decision, compare the actual phones, not just their processor names.
First, make sure you are comparing the right Snapdragon chip
MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026, calling it a 2 nm flagship SoC. Qualcomm announced the original Snapdragon 8 Elite on October 21, 2024, as its first mobile platform with a second-generation Oryon CPU. These are products from different launch years, not same-generation rivals.
“Snapdragon 8 Elite” is not interchangeable with “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.” A September 2026 comparison from TechPP uses the Gen 5 chip. Its figures do not answer how the Dimensity 9600 Pro compares with the original Snapdragon 8 Elite.
How their published specifications compare
| Feature | MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro | Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite (original) |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 2+3+3 all-big-core layout: two Arm C2-Ultra cores up to 4.55 GHz and six C2-Pro cores, three up to 4.35 GHz and three up to 3.1 GHz, according to MediaTek. | Custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU, up to 4.47 GHz on one platform version. Qualcomm also lists a 4.32 GHz version and a seven-core variant; the maximum clock varies by platform version. See Qualcomm. |
| GPU | Mali-G2 Ultra NX, according to MediaTek. | Adreno GPU, according to Qualcomm. |
| Memory and storage | Lists LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage support. These are platform capabilities; a phone maker chooses which to implement in a handset. MediaTek’s specifications | Not stated on the cited Qualcomm product page. |
| Connectivity | Lists Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.2. MediaTek’s listed features do not guarantee that every phone will implement them. MediaTek | Includes an X80 5G modem and FastConnect 7900 connectivity system; Qualcomm lists Wi-Fi 7 and peak modem download speed up to 10 Gbps. Qualcomm |
| Video capabilities | Lists 8K60 video and up to 4K240 slow-motion capture. A handset maker determines the camera hardware and features actually offered. MediaTek | Not stated on the cited Qualcomm product page. |
| AI hardware | MediaTek describes a dual-NPU architecture. Supported AI features and models depend on the handset and its software. MediaTek | Hexagon NPU. The chip specification alone does not establish which AI features a particular phone supports. Qualcomm |
What the performance claims do—and do not—tell you
Dimensity 9600 Pro: MediaTek’s comparison is with its previous generation
MediaTek claims up to 17% higher single-core and 15% higher multi-core CPU performance than its own previous generation. For graphics, it claims up to 27% higher peak performance, 24% lower power consumption at peak performance, and 18% faster ray tracing than that same prior-generation baseline. The company also reports support for gaming up to 185 fps. These are manufacturer claims, not matched test results against the original Snapdragon 8 Elite. MediaTek’s launch announcement

Snapdragon 8 Elite: Qualcomm also cites gains over its prior generation
Qualcomm claims up to 45% higher CPU performance and 44% greater CPU power efficiency, plus up to 40% higher GPU performance and 40% better GPU efficiency. Those figures compare the Snapdragon 8 Elite with Qualcomm’s previous generation, not with the Dimensity 9600 Pro. Qualcomm also notes that the original chip comes in platform variants, so the highest listed CPU clock does not apply to every version. Qualcomm’s product page
Because each company uses its own previous generation as the baseline, the percentages cannot be compared directly. They do not show which chip wins a shared benchmark or how either performs in a specific phone.

What matters in a real phone comparison
A processor’s platform capabilities are only part of the phone experience. The handset’s cooling, battery, software, camera tuning, and regional configuration can affect performance and day-to-day usefulness. Compare specific retail models and look for evidence that tests both phones under comparable conditions.
- Sustained speed and gaming: Look for repeated runs or sustained-load results, not only a peak score. Cooling design and power limits can influence how performance holds up over time.
- Heat and battery life: Prefer tests that identify the exact phone, workload, settings, and test duration. Chip-level efficiency claims do not establish battery life in a particular handset.
- Camera and video: Platform support is not a promise of identical camera features. Sensor choice, image processing, recording modes, and manufacturer tuning are phone-level decisions.
- AI features: A dual NPU or Hexagon NPU does not guarantee that a phone includes a particular model or feature. Check the handset maker’s software specifications.
- Price, software support, and availability: Compare the exact regional variant and its current price, update policy, and availability where you live. No current model list or market-specific price is established here.
For a fair chip comparison, use identified retail phones, the same benchmark versions and settings, repeated runs, and sustained-load results. Testing should also account for ambient conditions and battery state; without those controls, scores may not be meaningfully comparable.

Which chip should you choose?
On specifications alone, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is the newer platform and explicitly lists LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 support. That does not prove it delivers a better overall phone. The original Snapdragon 8 Elite has a different architecture and platform variants, and the available launch-era partner list does not establish which models are still available in your market. Qualcomm’s October 2024 announcement
Choose between actual phones once independent, comparable reviews are available for the exact models and regional versions you can buy. Give sustained performance, battery life, heat, camera results, software support, and price more weight than a generational percentage or peak clock taken out of context.
