An electromagnetic brake needs a rectifier when its coil requires DC but the available supply is AC—and only if the brake or an upstream power module does not already convert the power. Check the brake’s exact coil specification and wiring diagram before choosing a supply; the word “electromagnetic” alone does not tell you what to connect.
When does an electromagnetic brake need a rectifier?
A rectifier converts AC to DC. It is needed when the brake’s coil is specified for DC and the available source is AC, unless a built-in or upstream component already provides the required DC. mayr describes bridge and half-wave rectifiers as a way to connect DC consumers, including electromagnetic brakes, to AC supplies (mayr’s brake rectifier overview).
Do not assume every electromagnetic brake has a DC coil. Verify the coil type, rated voltage, and current or power from the brake nameplate, product documentation, and wiring diagram. A mismatch can prevent correct operation or damage the coil or switching components. If the brake documentation specifies an AC coil, or a compatible supply module already delivers the specified output, a separate rectifier may not be needed.
What information should you gather before choosing a supply?
Record the brake and control-system details first. Use the exact model’s instructions and final wiring diagram as the authority, since ratings and permitted configurations can differ between products.

- Brake identity: exact model and any installed rectifier or supply module.
- Coil requirements: AC or DC, rated voltage, and current or power.
- Available source: AC or DC, voltage, frequency where applicable, and allowable range.
- Operating conditions: ambient temperature and expected switching frequency.
- Control needs: required release and engagement response, switching arrangement, and any overexcitation or holding-power reduction requirement.
- System constraints: monitoring or feedback, approvals, and compatibility requirements listed for the brake and module.
How to compare rectifier and supply options
Compare the candidate unit against the brake’s requirements and the supply actually available. Check all of the following in the manufacturer’s documentation:
- Input: the permitted supply type and voltage range must cover the source you will connect.
- Output: confirm the rectified output is appropriate for the coil, including the specified voltage and whether the output arrangement matches the brake instructions.
- Current, power, and temperature: the unit’s continuous and thermal limits must suit the coil and ambient conditions. Do not select from a peak or headline rating without checking the conditions attached to it.
- Brake compatibility: confirm that the rectifier or module is approved or specified for the exact brake or brake family.
- Switching behavior: check whether the brake requires a particular switching mode, response, or power-reduction function.
- System requirements: verify monitoring, feedback, approvals, and control-wiring requirements for the complete installation.
Manufacturer ratings are product limits, not universal brake requirements. For example, mayr lists different rectifier variants with maximum AC inputs of 230, 400, 500, or 600 VAC and output-voltage ceilings that vary by variant and rectifier type. Its published output-current figures range from 1.7 A to 4.0 A across displayed variants. For displayed 230 VAC configurations, mayr gives coil-power ceilings up to 517 W at temperatures up to 50 °C and up to 352 W at temperatures up to 85 °C. These values apply to the specified mayr products and conditions; they are not generic selection targets. The configured product specification or drawing should be checked for the particular part (mayr product ratings).

Bridge or half-wave rectifier: which should you use?
Both bridge and half-wave rectifiers are used in brake applications. mayr describes both types for connecting DC consumers to AC supplies, and its safety-brake material also discusses supplying its brakes through either type (mayr safety-brake overview). That does not make them interchangeable for every brake. Use the rectifier type and wiring arrangement specified by the brake manufacturer; the available information does not support a universal “best” choice.
When is a purpose-designed supply module useful?
A standard rectifier may not provide the switching behavior a particular brake system requires. Some brake-specific modules can briefly provide overexcitation to support release, then reduce power for holding. Others offer switching or monitoring functions matched to a brake. The appropriate behavior and settings depend on the exact brake, module, and control circuit; do not apply a generic voltage or timing recipe.

As one product-specific example, mayr’s ROBA switch accepts 100–500 VAC and changes from bridge to half-wave rectification after an adjustable, brake-specific time. Those figures describe that product, not a general input range or setting for other brakes (mayr ROBA switch). mayr’s guidance for supply modules calls for checking the particular module and brake instructions for switching voltage, power class, compatibility, approvals, monitoring, and feedback (mayr supply and monitoring components).
What does rectification change when switching the brake?
Switching an inductive coil off can produce a voltage peak. mayr says its rectifiers limit these peaks and reduce the load on switching contacts. Treat that as a function of the specified mayr products, not as proof that any rectifier replaces a separately required protection circuit. Follow the brake, rectifier, and control-system instructions for the complete switching arrangement (mayr brake rectifier overview).

Why coil voltage must be checked rather than assumed
Coil ratings vary by brake and manufacturer. For example, Ogura’s holding-brake material describes brakes discussed there as normally using 24 or 90 V DC coils. Those figures illustrate particular product information; they are not a general standard for electromagnetic brakes (Ogura holding-brake material). Select by the exact brake’s stated coil rating, not by another manufacturer’s example.
