Keep LEGO builds out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and in a dry spot. LEGO warns that direct sunlight can gradually affect brick color and that temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolor over time. If a display is near a window, moving it out of the sun is the clearest way to reduce exposure.
Choose a safer display location
- Avoid direct sunlight. Do not place a model where it regularly receives direct sun. LEGO recommends storing bricks away from it because exposure can gradually affect color. LEGO’s storage guidance also lists clear storage bins and minifigure display cases as storage options, but does not say ordinary cases block UV.
- Keep builds away from heat. Avoid placing them near heat sources or in hot locations. LEGO says temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may cause bricks to become brittle or discolor over time.
- Choose a dry place. A dry location is sensible for display and storage; avoid combining sun exposure with hot conditions.
If a window is the problem, prioritize moving the model farther from direct sun. A case may help organize or contain dust, but treat it as UV protection only if the specific case’s current specifications support that claim. The official guidance does not quantify the protection offered by cases or window film.
Why bricks can look discolored—even without direct sunlight
Not every color difference means a displayed brick has faded. LEGO explains that slight shade variations can occur between production batches, and recycled pieces can combine different shades. The company separately identifies direct sunlight, cigarette smoke, and extreme temperature variations as factors that can gradually affect build color. Its guidance does not diagnose the cause of a particular brick’s change or give a timeline for fading.
That means yellowing in a room with no direct sun does not, on its own, identify the cause. Other exposures may be relevant, but the available official guidance does not establish why an individual piece changed color.

Clean bricks without adding heat or sun exposure
- Hand-wash the pieces in water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). Use a soft cloth or sponge and mild detergent if needed.
- Rinse with clear water.
- Let the pieces dry without direct sunlight. Do not use an oven, microwave, or hair dryer, and do not put LEGO pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher.
These precautions follow LEGO’s cleaning guidance; they avoid the heat and direct sun the company cautions against.
What to do about severe discoloration
LEGO advises contacting the company when pieces are extremely discolored. Its guidance does not promise that a home restoration method will reverse the change, so avoid assuming that a cleaning or treatment will restore the original color.
