To keep related pages together without leaving them open, put them in a Chrome tab group and choose Close group. Chrome keeps a closed group available to reopen. For a single page, use a bookmark; to restore a recently closed tab or window, use Chrome’s reopen shortcut. The steps differ on computers, Android, and iPhone or iPad.
Choose what you need to save
Chrome’s built-in options preserve different things. A bookmark saves an individual page, a tab group keeps related tabs together, and the startup option Continue where you left off is for returning to a broader browsing session. These options are not interchangeable: choose based on whether you want one page, a set of pages, or your prior session.
- One page: bookmark it for later access. On iPhone or iPad, Chrome also offers Reading List.
- Related pages: organize them in a tab group, then close the group when you want to clear the tab strip.
- Recently closed tab or window: use the reopen shortcut.
- Broader prior session: set Chrome to continue where you left off at startup.
Save a tab group on a computer
Google’s computer instructions describe creating a new or using an existing group, naming it, choosing a color, and adding tabs. Menu labels and availability can vary by Chrome version.
- Select the tabs you want to keep together, then create a new tab group or add them to an existing one.
- Give the group a descriptive name and, if useful, choose a color so it is easier to identify.
- When you want to close its tabs without discarding the group, right-click the group and select Close group.
- To return to the pages, reopen the closed group from the bookmarks bar or menu. If groups are not visible on the bookmarks bar, check Chrome’s Appearance setting for the option to show tab groups there.
Google says a closed tab group is retained rather than deleted. This is different from relying on the recently closed-tab shortcut: a group is the built-in way to keep related tabs available as a group after closing them.

Save individual pages or restore a session
Bookmark a page
Use a bookmark when you want to keep an individual page independently of a particular group or browsing session. It is the clearest choice for a page you expect to revisit later.
Continue where you left off
In Chrome’s startup settings, choose Continue where you left off to have Chrome resume the prior browsing session when it starts. This addresses session continuity rather than creating a separate, organized archive of selected pages.

Reopen something you just closed
For a recently closed tab or window, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac. Google documents this for reopening recently closed items; it should not be treated as a guaranteed long-term record of everything you have browsed.
Save and reopen tabs on Android
Chrome for Android provides tab groups and an Inactive tabs area in the tab switcher. Google says group changes are automatically saved and synced across devices when you are signed in. A closed group can be reopened under Tab groups.

- Open the tab switcher and go to Tab groups to find a closed group you want to reopen.
- To find inactive tabs or groups, open the tab switcher’s Inactive tabs section and tap the item to restore it.
- If you do not want tabs to sync or groups from other devices to open automatically, review Chrome’s relevant sync and group-opening settings.
Whether groups appear across devices depends on sign-in and sync settings; the Android instructions do not mean that every device will show the same tabs regardless of those settings.
Save and reopen tabs on iPhone or iPad
Chrome’s iPhone and iPad instructions use controls distinct from the computer’s right-click menu. From the tab switcher, you can add a tab to Bookmarks or Reading List. Chrome also supports closing all tab groups and reopening a closed group from the tab groups view.

- Choose Bookmarks for a page you want to keep as a saved page.
- Choose Reading List when you want to set a page aside to read later.
- To return to a closed group, open the tab groups view and choose the group there.

These steps follow Google Chrome Help’s published computer, Android, and iPhone/iPad instructions. Because menus and controls can change between versions, use the labels available in your installed Chrome.
