Use polls or questions for participation during a live talk; use clickable slide links when viewers need to choose their own route through the material. In either case, keep the slides focused and test the deck in the mode you plan to present.
Choose the kind of interaction your presentation needs
“Interactive” can mean two different things: the presenter invites responses during a session, or viewers control where they go in a deck. You can combine them, but they solve different problems.
| Approach | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live audience responses | You want participants to answer, ask questions, react, or give feedback during a session. | Whether the format is in-person or remote, which response types you need, how people will join, and how you will use their responses. |
| Clickable navigation within a deck | Viewers need to choose a topic, jump to a relevant slide, or follow a self-guided route. | Whether links work, whether any linked files travel with the deck, and whether viewers will use it live or on their own. |
PowerPoint supports links to other slides, websites, and files. For live responses, Microsoft describes PowerPoint Live feedback, while Mentimeter lists question formats such as polls and quizzes. These are examples, not a ranking: the cited product pages do not provide an independent comparison of services, so check each tool’s current features and access requirements before choosing.
Plan the story before adding interaction
Set one audience outcome
Write down what you want viewers to understand or do—for example, choose between options, understand a decision, or answer a question. Then decide whether that outcome calls for a live response or a self-directed route through slides.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a clear beginning, middle, and end
Introduce the subject and why it matters, develop the explanation in a logical order, and finish with the takeaway and a next step or time for questions. Place an interaction where the response will help explain the point, check understanding, or apply an idea. Microsoft recommends this broad structure and cautions against putting too much information on individual slides.
Choose a few useful moments
Use a poll or show of hands for quick group input. An open question can prompt discussion, but allow time for people to answer. In a webinar, chat questions, polls, digital hand raising, or reactions may suit the format; in person, a demonstration, prop, or volunteer activity may work better. Pick a small number of moments that serve the presentation rather than adding an interaction to every slide.

Add clickable links in PowerPoint
Links are useful when viewers need to choose what to explore next, revisit a topic, or open a related resource. Microsoft documents links from text, shapes, and pictures to a place in the current presentation, a website, or a file.
- Select the text, shape, or picture you want viewers to click.
- Choose Insert > Link.
- Choose the destination. To link to a slide in the same deck, select Place in This Document, then choose the slide title. For a website or file, select the appropriate destination and enter or choose it.
- Test the link in presentation mode before sharing or presenting. If it points to a file stored on your computer, move that file along with the presentation when you transfer the deck.
Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions are available in its PowerPoint guide to adding a hyperlink to a slide and its instructions for creating or editing a hyperlink.

Keep the slides readable and the interaction purposeful
An interaction should help the audience make a choice, check understanding, share a useful example, or focus on a point. Microsoft warns that too many creative elements or audience questions can distract. Its article offers these slide-count ranges as practical guidance—not a universal rule or a tested formula:
| Talk length | Microsoft’s suggested slide range |
|---|---|
| 10 minutes | 5–10 slides |
| 15 minutes | 7–15 slides |
| 20 minutes | 10–20 slides |
| 30 minutes | 15–30 slides |
| 45 minutes | 25–45 slides |
The ranges come from Microsoft’s interactive presentation guidance, published November 10, 2025. Let the amount and complexity of the content determine the final deck.

Rehearse and check the audience experience
Run through the presentation in the same mode you will use for delivery. Check links, audio or video, audience-joining instructions, and how long each question or activity takes. Leave time for questions at the end. Microsoft says PowerPoint Live attendees can provide feedback and receive a short survey after a presentation; that feedback can help you reflect on the delivery and interaction.
- For a live session: make sure participants know how to respond and that the chosen activity fits the room or webinar format.
- For a self-guided deck: make link destinations obvious, test each one, and check that linked local files are available wherever the deck will be opened.
- For both: rehearse transitions and remove interactions that interrupt the story without helping the audience.
Match the tool to the job
Use PowerPoint links when the main need is navigation between slides or to external resources. Consider audience-response features when you need people to answer, ask questions, or provide feedback during a session. Microsoft and Mentimeter describe examples of these capabilities, but their cited pages do not establish which service is best for a particular audience or compare current plans. Choose based on the response formats, setup, and access your audience needs.
