For routine cleaning, wash a hard-sided cooler inside and out with mild soap and warm water, then rinse and dry it completely with the lid open. For tougher stains, try a baking-soda-and-water mixture. Persistent odors need more care: follow the instructions for your specific cooler, because manufacturers disagree about bleach and other chemicals.
Clean routine dirt with soap and warm water
- Empty the cooler and remove loose debris.
- Wash the interior and exterior with mild soap and warm water, using a soft cloth or sponge. Coleman recommends this routine wash, and RTIC recommends washing its hard coolers after each trip. Coleman’s cleaning guide · RTIC’s hard-cooler care instructions
- Rinse away soap and loosened dirt. Check seams, corners, and the drain area for residue.
Remove tougher stains with baking soda
If washing does not lift a stain, mix baking soda with water and use the mixture to clean the affected area. Both Coleman and Igloo recommend this approach for tougher stains. Follow it with a thorough rinse so no cleaning residue remains. Coleman’s cleaning guide · Igloo’s product FAQ
Choose an odor treatment allowed by your cooler’s maker
Odor advice is not universal. Coleman and Igloo describe bleach-based treatments, while RTIC cautions against chemicals in its hard-cooler instructions. Check the care guidance for your exact cooler before using bleach or any other chemical, and do not use a treatment its manufacturer cautions against.
- Coleman: Its guide suggests a diluted chlorine-bleach solution for odor. If the odor persists, it suggests leaving a cloth saturated with vanilla extract inside the cooler overnight. - Igloo: Its FAQ says to wipe the interior with bleach while wearing gloves, rinse thoroughly, and let the cooler dry open in direct sunlight. For hard-to-remove odors, it also suggests leaving a vanilla-extract-soaked paper towel inside overnight. Igloo’s product FAQ
- RTIC: Its hard-cooler instructions caution against chemicals, so do not apply a bleach treatment to an RTIC cooler based on another brand’s advice. Use RTIC’s care instructions for that cooler. RTIC’s hard-cooler care instructions
Rinse, dry, and store with airflow
After cleaning or odor treatment, rinse away the cleaner thoroughly and let the cooler dry completely before using or storing it. Igloo specifically calls for complete drying; RTIC recommends leaving the lid slightly open or propped during long-term storage.
