1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by checking that both earbuds are seated in the case and have power, then confirm Bluetooth is on. If the problem remains, follow the branch for charging, pairing, or automatic switching below. The charging connector and reset controls vary by AirPods Pro generation, so identify your case before using model-specific steps.
First, check the case and charge status
AirPods Pro cases differ by generation: check whether yours has a Lightning or USB-C port, and whether it supports wireless charging. Use a cable that fits your case. If you have a supported wireless-charging case, you can use a compatible Qi charger instead.
- Put both earbuds in the case and close the lid.
- Connect the case to power with the matching cable. Check that the cable is firmly connected to both the case and power adapter, and that the adapter is plugged into a working outlet. Apple says the case can charge with or without the earbuds inside.
- Leave the AirPods and case charging for at least 15 minutes before testing them again.
- If charging wirelessly, place the case on the charger with its status light facing up. Reposition it if the light does not come on; if that does not help, try a compatible wired connection.
Check the battery status on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or use the case’s status light. Apple describes green as fully charged and amber as less than one full charge remaining. No light is a reason to charge before use, not a diagnosis of a particular fault. Light patterns can vary by model and firmware, so do not interpret every flashing or pulsing pattern the same way.
If your AirPods Pro won’t connect
Try the basic connection checks first
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you are connecting to.
- Put both AirPods in the case and confirm that both are charging.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Choose the AirPods Pro in the device’s audio output picker and test playback with the volume turned up.
- If they do not appear or will not connect, return them to the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it and try pairing again.
On iPhone or iPad, open the case near the device. For AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white, then follow the on-screen prompt. On a Mac, you can pair manually from Bluetooth settings.

Reset AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2
Apple’s reset procedure for AirPods Pro 1 and 2 uses the rear setup button. Do not use it for AirPods Pro 3, which has a different front-of-case tap sequence.
- Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Bluetooth settings. If the AirPods are listed, tap the information button next to them, then choose Forget This Device.
- Open the case lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Hold the open case near your device and follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect.
Resetting clears custom AirPods settings, so you may need to set them up again. If you have AirPods Pro 3, follow Apple’s model-specific reset instructions rather than using the Pro 1 or 2 button steps. Apple’s AirPods reset instructions describe the separate procedures.

If one or both AirPods Pro still won’t charge
After the initial charge attempt, check that the cable connector matches the case and that the cable, adapter, and power source work. For a supported wireless case, reposition it on the Qi charger with the status light facing up. Remove visible debris from the charging port carefully; avoid putting liquids or metal objects in it.
If the earbuds or case still do not charge after these checks, consult Apple’s charging troubleshooting guidance or contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider. A charging problem does not by itself establish that the cause is software-related.

If AirPods Pro won’t switch between Apple devices
Check automatic switching requirements
Automatic switching depends on compatible AirPods Pro, current operating-system versions on the participating Apple devices, and those devices being signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. If manual Bluetooth audio works but automatic switching is unavailable, check that the devices meet those requirements and use the same account.
Choose the AirPods manually
You can route audio yourself if automatic switching is unavailable or inconvenient:
