Which settings save the most battery?
Lower the screen light
Built-in lighting uses battery power. Amazon recommends lowering the light on Kindle models that have one; Kobo brightness controls vary by model, and some older Kobo eReaders do not have ComfortLight. Choose the lowest level you can comfortably read at rather than making the screen unusably dim. Amazon’s Kindle battery guidance and Kobo’s brightness instructions describe model-specific controls.
Turn off wireless between downloads and syncs
Wi-Fi is useful for downloading books and syncing progress, but it can be off while you read if you do not need those features. Amazon recommends turning off the internet connection when it is not needed; Kobo says disabling Wi-Fi extends battery life. Turn it back on when you want to sync or download. Shorten idle time
Put the reader to sleep when you finish. Kindle users can briefly press the power button; supported Kindles also offer Power saver in Device options. Kobo users can look under Settings > Energy saving and privacy for automatic sleep and power-off intervals, then choose a shorter interval if available. Sleep and power-off are different: sleep lets you resume more quickly, while power-off fully shuts the reader down. Check your model’s instructions for the exact behavior and labels. Why does my e-reader battery drain so fast?
First identify when the battery drops: during reading, while idle, after setup or a large download, or while charging. The pattern helps distinguish ordinary use from an accessory or charging problem.
It drains after setup or a large download
A new or recently set-up Kindle may use more battery while it downloads books, updates, and indexes content. Amazon notes that indexing enables search and affects battery life. After a large download, leave the Kindle charging for a while so indexing can finish before judging its usual battery performance. Amazon Kindle Support

It drains while stored or in a bag
On some Kobo readers, a shifting SleepCover or a nearby magnet can wake the device. Make sure the cover is secure and keep the reader away from other magnetic accessories. Check for software updates as part of troubleshooting. Kobo battery guidance and Kobo battery and charging troubleshooting
It does not charge reliably
Try a different USB cable if charging is intermittent. Kobo says a replacement cable should transfer data, not just provide power. For compatible Kobo devices, its troubleshooting guidance suggests a 10 W, 5 V adapter and warns against high-wattage fast-charging adapters; follow the instructions for your specific reader rather than assuming that advice applies to every model. A practical troubleshooting order
- Note the pattern. Check whether the drain occurs during reading, while idle, during setup, or after a large download. Allow time for Kindle downloads, updates, and indexing to complete.
- Reduce routine use. Lower the light, disable Wi-Fi when it is unnecessary, and shorten automatic sleep time if your model supports it.
- Check storage and covers. If the reader loses charge while put away, secure the Kobo SleepCover if applicable and move the device away from other magnetic accessories.
- Test charging equipment. Try a suitable data-capable cable and follow the adapter guidance for your exact model.
- Contact the manufacturer if the problem continues. Follow the service instructions for your model. For example, Amazon’s safety information for the Kindle (10th Generation) says its lithium-ion polymer battery should be replaced only by an authorized service provider; do not assume that statement covers every Kindle generation. What battery-life claims can you expect?
Rakuten Kobo broadly claims up to two months of battery life, depending on how frequently the eReader is used. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every model or reading pattern. Kobo battery guidance Neither the cited manufacturer guidance nor its usage conditions establish how many additional hours any one setting will provide, so treat the adjustments as ways to reduce avoidable drain rather than a promise of a specific gain.
