To create a Kubernetes cluster, first choose where it will run: use kind or minikube for local learning and development, a managed service such as EKS, GKE, or AKS for a cloud cluster, or kubeadm to bootstrap a self-managed cluster on Linux machines. There is no single command that creates all three kinds; each path has different prerequisites and operating responsibilities.

Choose the cluster type that fits your goal

Path Best fit What you need Who operates the cluster
kind or minikube Local learning, testing, and development A compatible local container runtime or virtual-machine environment You run the local tool and its environment
Amazon EKS, Google Kubernetes Engine, or Azure Kubernetes Service A cloud-hosted cluster The selected provider’s account, permissions, configuration, and any required billing setup The provider manages parts of the service; exact responsibilities and defaults vary by provider and mode
kubeadm A self-managed cluster on Linux machines Linux hosts, a container runtime, Kubernetes components, network connectivity, and a Pod network You manage the machines and cluster setup

For a first local experiment, choose kind or minikube. If you need a cloud-hosted control plane, follow the guide for your chosen provider. Choose kubeadm when you intend to configure and operate the cluster on your own machines.

Create a local cluster with kind or minikube

Option 1: kind

Install a supported container provider, then run:

kind create cluster

kind bootstraps a cluster using a pre-built node image. It can detect Docker, Podman, or nerdctl. Rootless Podman and nerdctl require extra setup for full functionality. Check the kind quick start and release notes for node-image compatibility with the Kubernetes version you intend to run: kind Quick Start.

Option 2: minikube

With Docker or a compatible container or virtual-machine environment available, start a cluster with:

minikube start

See the minikube start guide for the supported setup options and prerequisites. Neither local path requires a particular physical computer model; the relevant requirement is a compatible runtime or VM environment.

Create a managed cloud cluster

Managed-cluster instructions are provider-specific. Your account, region, service mode, permissions, and configuration determine the exact steps, so use the current official guide rather than applying one provider’s commands or defaults to another.

Amazon EKS

AWS’s EKS cluster creation guide covers prerequisites, creating a cluster IAM role, creating the cluster, updating kubeconfig, and completing cluster setup. It notes that multiple networking add-ons are installed by default. Review the guide for the requirements and choices applicable to your AWS account and cluster configuration.

Google Kubernetes Engine Autopilot

Google’s GKE quick start requires a Google Cloud project, enabling the Kubernetes Engine API, and enabling billing. In Autopilot, Google manages configuration that includes scaling, security, and preconfigured settings. Follow the guide’s cleanup step to delete resources when you are finished; leaving cloud resources in place can result in ongoing charges.

Azure Kubernetes Service

Microsoft’s AKS tutorial walks through cluster creation and kubectl access, including Kubernetes RBAC for role-scoped access. The Azure portal quick start uses evaluation-oriented defaults and directs readers to review production needs before using a cluster for production.

Bootstrap a self-managed cluster with kubeadm

The Kubernetes kubeadm guide describes a minimum viable cluster workflow. Its cited page is written for Kubernetes v1.37; check current version support and follow instructions matching the versions you install. The order matters: machines and runtime first, control plane next, then Pod networking and worker nodes.

1. Prepare the Linux machines

The Kubernetes kubeadm documentation lists a baseline of 2 GiB or more of RAM per machine, at least 2 CPUs on the control-plane machine, and full network connectivity among cluster machines. These are the guide’s operational prerequisites, not a universal sizing recommendation for every workload. See the kubeadm cluster creation guide.

2. Install a container runtime and kubeadm components

Install a supported container runtime and the kubeadm components on each host using instructions for that machine’s Linux distribution and version. Confirm the versions you plan to install and review Kubernetes version-skew guidance before joining nodes.

kubeadm init

If you expect to make the control plane highly available later, select a shared control-plane endpoint at the outset. The kubeadm guide says converting a single-control-plane cluster created without one to a highly available cluster is not supported.

4. Install one Pod network

Install a compatible Container Network Interface (CNI) Pod network. Pods need this network to communicate, and CoreDNS will not start until the network is installed. Use only one Pod network per cluster, and choose a Pod CIDR that does not overlap the host networks. Some network plugins require you to provide a matching CIDR during initialization.

5. Join worker nodes

Use the kubeadm join command generated during initialization on each worker node. Check the version-skew guidance for the Kubernetes and kubeadm versions actually installed.

6. Configure kubectl access securely

Configure kubectl using the appropriate kubeconfig. Treat kubeconfig files as credentials: kubeadm’s admin.conf grants cluster-admin privileges, while super-admin.conf is a break-glass superuser credential. Do not share these files; create scoped credentials for ordinary users.

7. Verify networking and cluster health

Check that the Pod network is functioning and cluster components are healthy before deploying workloads. The kubeadm guide identifies CoreDNS reaching Running as an indication that the network is working.

What to check before using the cluster

  • Correct environment: confirm whether the cluster is local, managed in the cloud, or self-managed on Linux.
  • Networking: for kubeadm, install one compatible CNI network and avoid Pod CIDR overlap with host networks.
  • Access: protect administrator kubeconfigs and use scoped credentials for routine users.
  • Versions: follow documentation and version-skew guidance that match the Kubernetes and tool versions you are installing.
  • Cloud lifecycle: review provider-specific cleanup instructions when a temporary cluster is no longer needed.
