To create an icon in Adobe Illustrator, build it from simple vector shapes, refine the geometry and styling, then export it as SVG for scalable use or PNG when your project needs a raster image. For a screen icon, start with an RGB document using pixel units and an artboard close to the icon’s intended display size.
1. Set up an Illustrator document for the icon
For a digital icon, create an RGB document and use pixels as the units. Set the artboard to approximately the dimensions where the icon will appear; this makes it easier to judge spacing and screen rendering while you work. Adobe recommends this setup in its icon-set tutorial.
If you are making a family of icons, use the same artboard dimensions and margins for each one. Consistent working space makes visual alignment across the set easier.
2. Build the icon from simple shapes
Use Illustrator’s basic shapes as building blocks: for example, circles, rectangles, and rounded rectangles. Overlap them to create the main silhouette, then combine or subtract areas to form details and cutouts.

Combine or subtract shapes
Select the overlapping shapes and use Pathfinder operations such as Minus Front to remove one shape from another. You can also use the Shape Builder tool to combine regions or remove unwanted parts. Adobe demonstrates these techniques for constructing a page symbol and heart in its icon-set tutorial.
Keep the shape count and detail level appropriate for the icon’s intended size. Small details that look clear when zoomed in may become indistinct at the final display size, so inspect the design at its actual dimensions as you refine it.

3. Make related icons look consistent
For a single icon, choose a clear visual treatment and apply it consistently. For an icon set, reuse the same fill colors, stroke weight, corner treatment, and level of detail unless a specific symbol requires a deliberate variation.
If you need to change matching objects together, select an object and choose Select > Same > Appearance. Illustrator can select objects with matching appearance so you can adjust their styling as a group. See Adobe’s guidance on creating icon sets.

4. Align shapes and check screen rendering
A grid can help keep repeated sizes, gaps, and alignments consistent. Turn on a visible grid and use Snap To Grid when it helps position your shapes precisely; it is an aid, not a rule that every icon must follow.
For artwork destined for a raster format such as PNG, use Pixel Preview to see how vector shapes will appear as pixels. Pixel alignment and snapping can make straight edges look sharper on screen, but check the result against your design: forcing every edge onto the pixel grid can compromise curves or spacing. 5. Export the icon as SVG or PNG
Choose the format based on the destination. SVG is vector-oriented and can scale, making it suitable when the target environment supports SVG. PNG is raster; use it when the project requires a raster image or when you need to specify raster output settings such as resolution, antialiasing, and background or transparency. Confirm the target platform’s requirements before exporting.

Export named assets with Asset Export
- Open Window > Asset Export.
- Drag the icon artwork into the Asset Export panel.
- Give the asset a useful name.
- Choose the required format and size or sizes.
- Export the asset, then check the resulting file in its intended context.
Optional: start with Text to Vector Graphic
Illustrator also offers Text to Vector Graphic as an optional way to generate vector scenes, subjects, and icons, either in context or on a blank canvas.
