PS5 Pro can make some older games look sharper or run more smoothly, but the result depends on the game. Improvements come from extra graphics-processing headroom, PSSR image upscaling, system-level Game Boost for supported games, and developer updates that add Pro-specific modes. None guarantees native 4K or a universal frame-rate increase.
How does PS5 Pro enhance older games?
There are three main routes to improvement: the console’s additional GPU capacity, system-level compatibility features, and updates made for individual games. A title may benefit from one or more of them, so the exact result is game-specific.

More GPU headroom
Sony said in its 2024 PS5 Pro announcement that the console has 67% more GPU Compute Units and memory that is 28% faster than the current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s hardware comparison and stated rendering capability, not a promise that every game will run 45% faster or gain the same visual improvement. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement
Game Boost and developer updates
Game Boost is a system-level feature. Sony says it may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games. Separately, developers can update a game with PS5 Pro-specific rendering changes or modes. A game-specific update can define a particular resolution, frame-rate target, or graphics trade-off; Game Boost alone does not mean that a bespoke Pro mode exists.

Does PS5 Pro improve PS4 games?
It can, but support and results vary. Sony says Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance for supported PS4 games, while its Enhanced Image Quality feature can improve resolution in select PS4 titles. Neither statement applies to every PS4 game or specifies a fixed uplift. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement
For an individual PS4 game, check whether its improvement is attributed to Game Boost, Enhanced Image Quality, or a separate developer update. Those labels describe different mechanisms, and the result should not be assumed from the game’s age or compatibility alone.
Does PSSR increase resolution?
PSSR can make the displayed image look as though it has more detail by reconstructing and upscaling a game’s image. It does not necessarily change the resolution at which the game originally rendered each frame. In other words, an image upscaled to 4K is not automatically a native 4K render.
PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny described PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Sony reported in February 2026 that more than 50 PS5 Pro titles were using PSSR to boost effective resolution. The number is Sony’s reported count at that time, not a measure of how much resolution any one title gains. Sony’s February 2026 PSSR announcement
Upgraded PSSR and supported games
Sony announced an upgraded PSSR in February 2026, describing a substantially changed neural network and algorithm and naming Resident Evil Requiem as its first announced use. In a March 2026 post, Sony said a system software update brought broad support for the upgraded version, with improvements to reconstruction precision, image stability, motion stability, and fine detail. Sony also said the improved PSSR could be enabled for existing supported games through an optional PS5 Pro setting; results vary by title, and players can turn it off if visual effects are unexpected. Sony’s post included developer comments about titles including Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. For example, Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi said the upgraded PSSR restored fine detail such as character hair more naturally and reduced flickering and afterimage effects. That is the developer’s account, not an independent comparative test.
PSSR on PS5 Pro is not QSSR on PS5
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as a separate, performance-tier upscaling library for the base PS5, naming Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles. Sony described PSSR as the higher-end option for PS5 Pro. The two names refer to different upscaling libraries and should not be used interchangeably. Sony’s QSSR announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will older games run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?
Not necessarily. Extra GPU capacity and Game Boost can help supported games, but Sony does not promise that every PS4 or PS5 game will reach 60 frames per second. A 60 fps target is a title- and mode-specific claim; it is also distinct from a guarantee that the game sustains that rate in every scene.

Developer-authored modes illustrate how specific the trade-offs can be. In a 2024 roundup, Naughty Dog said The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered would get Pro-specific modes rendering at 1440p and upscaling to 4K via PSSR while targeting 60 fps. Insomniac said its Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank games would offer a Performance Pro mode combining Fidelity-mode image and ray-tracing features with a 60 fps target. These are statements about named games and modes, not a template for other titles. Sony’s 2024 developer roundup
How to check what a specific game gains
- Identify the game and version. Look for the current game update and any PS5 Pro-specific announcement; support details can change as patches arrive.
- Find the improvement mechanism. Determine whether the claim is about Game Boost, Enhanced Image Quality for a select PS4 title, upgraded PSSR, or a developer-authored Pro mode.
- Read the mode’s exact description. Separate native render resolution from upscaled output, and distinguish a frame-rate target from a universal guarantee.
- Check the conditions. Note the game version, mode, announcement or patch date, and any display requirements named by the developer before comparing claims.
What PS5 Pro does not guarantee
- Every PS4 game receiving Enhanced Image Quality or a visible resolution increase.
- Every older PS5 game getting a developer-authored Pro patch.
- Native 4K rendering whenever a game advertises an image upscaled to 4K.
- A fixed performance uplift or 60 fps in every supported game.
Sony’s wording for Game Boost is conditional: it “may stabilize or improve” performance in supported games. Its resolution feature applies to select PS4 titles, while Pro-specific modes and their trade-offs are announced title by title.
