To make Chrome reopen the pages you had open when you quit, go to More → Settings → On startup and select Continue where you left off. If the tabs or window are already closed, try reopening them with Ctrl+Shift+T or find them in History → Recently closed. These are separate actions: the startup setting affects future launches; it does not itself restore a session that Chrome no longer offers.

Turn startup restoration back on for future launches

  1. Open Chrome on your computer and select More (the three-dot menu).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open On startup.
  4. Select Continue where you left off.

Google says this setting tells Chrome to reopen the same pages that were open when you quit. It applies the next time Chrome starts; it is not a manual recovery command for tabs that have already disappeared. See Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page – Computer.

Try to reopen tabs or a window that are already closed

Chrome Community replies suggest these manual recovery options. They may help if Chrome still lists the closed tabs or window, but they are not a guarantee that every lost session can be recovered.

Use the keyboard shortcut

Press Ctrl+Shift+T to try reopening the most recently closed tab or window. Repeat the shortcut to move through earlier closed items that Chrome still makes available.

Check recently closed items in History

  1. Open Chrome’s History menu.
  2. Look under Recently closed for the tab or window you want.
  3. Select an item if it appears.

The shortcut and History suggestions come from Chrome Community discussion about Chrome losing tabs on restart, rather than the official startup-settings instructions.

If Chrome does not offer the session

Changing On startup to Continue where you left off does not establish that Chrome can reconstruct a session it no longer exposes. A Chrome Community reply associates the Restore tabs prompt with Chrome detecting an unexpected end and suggests checking that you are using the right profile and looking in History. Treat those as troubleshooting suggestions, not a documented recovery guarantee or a definitive statement about when recovery is impossible. See the community discussion about tabs lost after a computer restart.

Platform and administrator limits

Google’s cited instructions cover Chrome on a computer; they do not establish mobile menu steps for this setting or these recovery options. Google also notes that Chromebook users at work or school may be unable to change startup or homepage settings when an administrator controls them. If the setting is unavailable on a managed Chromebook, contact the administrator.
