A first-person Soulslike has to make melee range, impact, and enemy attacks legible without showing the player character’s full body. A traditional third-person Soulslike can show the avatar and more of the nearby space at once. But the camera alone does not make a game Soulslike: its combat rhythm, risk and reward, exploration, and world structure matter too.

What changes when Soulslike combat moves to first person?

In first person, you aim at close, moving targets through the character’s eyes. Your weapon and the enemy fill much of the view, while your own body and some nearby surroundings are normally out of frame. That puts extra pressure on the game to communicate reach, timing, contact, and incoming danger through camera framing, weapon animation, sound, and enemy reactions.

A third-person camera can show the player character, its movement, and the target together, which may help communicate body motion and relative position. That is a perspective-based observation, not proof that third-person combat is always clearer or easier. Either view still needs readable timing and hit detection.

Design question First-person Soulslike Traditional third-person Soulslike
What can you see? The target and weapon are prominent, but the player character’s full body and some surrounding context are outside the normal view. The player character and more immediate space can appear together.
How does melee range read? The game must make distance and contact understandable from a view centered on the target; close-range aiming at moving enemies can be difficult. The camera can show the avatar, weapon movement, and target together, but clear reach and timing are still necessary.
How is player damage communicated? The game cannot rely on the player seeing their entire character react from outside; other visual and audio cues have to carry the information. The player’s character and enemy animations can be visible together, though that does not guarantee clearer feedback.
What makes it Soulslike? Perspective can coexist with features such as souls recovery, checkpoint rituals, challenging bosses, and secret-oriented backtracking. Third-person presentation is familiar in Soulslike games, but no single camera angle or fixed checklist defines the genre.

Why is first-person melee harder to read?

Arkane Studios’ account of making Dark Messiah describes several concrete problems: aiming at moving targets at close range, judging distance, communicating damage, and attacks occurring below the player’s field of view. Creative director Raphael Colantonio put the design challenge this way: “We didn’t want Half Life 2 with a sword instead of the crowbar.”

The team’s solutions included exaggerated animations, body models that could be manipulated separately, a wider field of view, and more forgiving enemy hit zones. These were specific design choices for Dark Messiah, not a universal recipe followed by every first-person action game. The account also describes distance judgment as an unresolved challenge, a reminder that perspective creates trade-offs rather than automatic improvements.

What makes a game Soulslike beyond its camera?

There is no universally agreed formal definition of “Soulslike” in the developer discussions cited here. Developers pointed to qualities including purposeful combat, risk and reward, meaningful exploration, atmosphere, and mystery, while disagreeing about difficulty and where the genre’s boundaries lie. As Salt and Sanctuary lead James Silva put it: “Because you can make very poor decisions, making very good decisions feels meaningful.”

That means a first-person game does not become a Soulslike simply because it has stamina-based swordplay, nor does a third-person camera guarantee the label. Consider how combat choices carry consequences, how the world rewards exploration, and how checkpoints, recovery, and progression shape the experience.

How do Valor Mortis and Lunacid illustrate the distinction?

Valor Mortis: first-person perspective with explicit Soulslike framing

One More Level describes Valor Mortis as an FPP Soulslike. A developer account reported by GamesRadar+ points to souls retrieval, bonfire-like checkpoints, challenging bosses, and backtracking to find secrets as part of its Soulslike format. The same report quotes a developer saying: “Valor Mortis isn’t really a stealth game though! It is much closer to Dark Souls in format.” Those systems and structures—not the first-person view by itself—explain the comparison.

Studio head and CEO Szymon Bryła described the unusual perspective as both an attraction and a risk: “The fact that there are practically no such games on the market is and was fascinating, but at the same time, it posed a significant risk in every respect.” That is the studio’s assessment, not a measured count of games or a market statistic.

Lunacid: a related first-person lineage

Lunacid developer Kira cited King’s Field and Shadow Tower as influences, and described modernizing elements such as gameplay, movement, inventory, and fast travel. This connects first-person fantasy role-playing to an older lineage, but influence alone does not establish that Lunacid is identical to a traditional Soulslike.

How should you compare two games?

To judge whether a first-person game captures the qualities you value in a traditional Soulslike, compare what each game actually communicates and asks you to do:

  • Melee readability: Can you judge reach, enemy position, and attack timing?
  • Hit and damage feedback: Do weapon contact, successful hits, and incoming damage register clearly?
  • View of the surrounding space: How much of the area around you is visible during a fight?
  • Risk and recovery: What do you lose after a mistake, and can you recover it?
  • Checkpoints and backtracking: How do checkpoints connect to the world, and do you revisit areas to uncover secrets or retrieve something?
  • Exploration and atmosphere: How does the game build mystery and encourage you to explore?

These questions help separate a camera preference from the combat and world-design qualities that give a game its Soulslike character.
