To upgrade RAM or add an SSD to a prebuilt gaming PC, first identify the exact PC model and check its specifications or maintenance guide. Those determine compatible memory, storage interfaces and sizes, available slots, and any mounting parts you need. Do not buy based only on a generic parts list or the appearance of a connector.
Start with the exact PC model
Find the model name or service tag on the case, in the system information, or in the original paperwork. If the manufacturer’s documentation identifies a separate motherboard model, note that too. Look up the PC’s specifications and maintenance guide; use the computer maker’s instructions to confirm what fits and how to install it.
A compatibility selector, such as Crucial’s memory and SSD upgrade selector, can help surface candidate parts. Treat its results as a starting point, then verify them against the PC’s documentation. Crucial notes that performance impact depends on the original computer or motherboard and the upgrade selected.
What RAM is compatible with my gaming PC?
Prebuilt gaming desktops generally use desktop DIMM memory, not the smaller SODIMMs used in laptops. Dell makes that distinction in its RAM installation and compatibility guidance. The exact supported DDR generation, maximum capacity, speed, number of slots, and recommended slot order vary by PC model. Check the maker’s specifications before buying; Dell warns that unsupported memory may damage a module or slot.

- Confirm the supported memory generation and desktop DIMM form factor.
- Check the maximum capacity and supported speed for your exact PC.
- Find how many memory slots are present and which are occupied.
- Follow the manual’s slot order when adding or replacing modules.
For example, Lenovo provides a specific installation order for memory in its P330 2nd Gen Tower instructions. That order is for that system, not a universal desktop rule. HP also directs users to model-specific guidance in its RAM upgrade guidance.
Can I add an SSD to my prebuilt PC?
Often, but only if the PC has a compatible connection and the necessary space and mounting hardware. An M.2 connector by itself does not prove that every M.2 SSD will work. Confirm the slot’s supported protocol, PCIe generation where applicable, physical drive length, keying, and any shared-resource or model-specific limitations in the PC documentation. Dell’s M.2 upgrade guidance highlights PCIe generation, physical size, and keying as compatibility considerations.

M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not by itself tell you whether the drive uses NVMe over PCIe or SATA. Match both the form factor and the interface or protocol supported by the slot. Check the manual for supported M.2 sizes and whether any other connector shares resources with it.
Choose a supported installation path
- M.2 SSD: Verify the slot supports the drive’s protocol and size, then check whether the PC includes the required screw, thermal plate, or other retention hardware.
- 2.5-inch SATA SSD: Verify there is a usable drive bay and compatible SATA connection. You may need a SATA data cable, a drive carrier, or other mounting parts; check the system contents and manual.
Crucial’s SSD installation guide illustrates a secondary 2.5-inch SATA drive connected to a motherboard SATA connector with a cable. Your prebuilt may have a different layout or require different parts. Lenovo’s Legion desktop upgrade guidance is another place to check for model-specific upgrade information.

Adding storage or replacing the boot drive?
Adding a secondary SSD is a storage expansion: install a supported drive in an available bay or slot, then confirm the system detects it. Replacing the boot drive is a separate task because the operating system and existing data must also be handled. Decide in advance whether you will migrate the existing installation or install an operating system anew, and make a backup before changing the boot drive. The cited installation guidance does not establish one universal migration process for every prebuilt PC.
Install the upgrade using the PC’s instructions
Use the maintenance guide for your exact chassis and motherboard, especially if the case has proprietary parts or unusual access steps. A cautious general sequence is:

- Shut down the PC, disconnect power and peripherals, and prepare the case as its manufacturer directs.
- Locate the specified memory slots or storage connector, checking the manual for the correct location and orientation.
- Install the RAM or SSD as instructed. Secure any required screw, carrier, cable, or other retention hardware.
- Close the case, reconnect the PC, and start it. Confirm that the new component is detected.
This sequence is only a general outline; the model’s service instructions take precedence. If the component is not detected, shut down and disconnect power before checking that it is seated in the specified slot, connected correctly, and supported by the PC. Recheck the manual’s slot or connector requirements before trying another configuration.

There is no universal RAM capacity or SSD model that is right for every prebuilt gaming PC. Choose memory that matches the system’s supported generation, capacity, and speed, and storage that matches its supported interface, protocol, and physical size. Compare candidate upgrades by the open slot or bay, required mounting hardware, and whether the drive is for extra storage or boot-drive replacement. The available sources do not establish a universal frame-rate increase from a RAM or SSD upgrade.
