The game behind the “Dark Souls and John Wick” comparison is Phantom Blade Zero, an action game from S-GAME. The comparison is shorthand, not an official genre label: S-GAME CEO Soulframe Liang likened its cinematic assassin fantasy and Chinese setting to John Wick, while a hands-on preview described combat-focused action alongside Souls-like exploration.
Why Phantom Blade Zero is compared to Dark Souls and John Wick
In an interview with Inverse published March 26, 2025, S-GAME CEO Soulframe Liang said: “You can easily see this as something like John Wick set in 16th-century China,” Inverse reported. That comparison points to the game’s cinematic assassin premise and setting; it does not mean the game is officially part of the John Wick franchise.

Liang also named three influences with different roles: action games such as Devil May Cry for combat, Dark Souls for exploration and world design, and Resident Evil for cinematic and emotional storytelling. So “Dark Souls meets John Wick” is a useful thumbnail, but it compresses several inspirations rather than describing a single, officially defined genre.
What the preview says gameplay is like
Inverse journalist Hayes Madsen reported playing for an hour. His preview describes Soul, an assassin resisting the organization that controls him, and combat built around fast weapon combos, parries, dodges, and weapon-specific moves. Exploration takes place between boss encounters. These are preview impressions from that reported session, not a claim that every part of the finished game has been independently tested.

Combat tempo and weapon variety
The preview presents combat as fast and combo-driven, with distinct moves tied to weapons. That is the part most aligned with action-game inspirations such as Devil May Cry: the description emphasizes chaining attacks and adapting to different weapons rather than only trading slow blows.
Timing and exploration
Parries and dodges add timing demands, while exploration and world design provide a Souls-like comparison beyond combat. Boss encounters are interspersed with exploration, according to Madsen’s preview; the source does not establish a full map structure or quantify how much time players spend between bosses.

As of October 7, 2026, the official PlayStation US listing gives Phantom Blade Zero an October 29, 2026 release date for PS5: PlayStation’s game listing. S-GAME’s official Steam Community announcement says launch moved to October 29 from September 9, 2026: S-GAME’s Steam announcement. Release dates can change, so check the platform listing near launch for the latest status.
