If videos are buffering or streaming feels sluggish on a Fire TV Stick, first check whether the problem affects one app or several. Then use Settings > Network > Network Status to see whether the Stick is struggling to reach your router or the router is struggling to reach the internet. Restarting the affected devices and checking app-specific issues are sensible next steps before considering purchases or disruptive fixes.
First, check whether it is one app or everything
Try a different streaming app and, if the Fire TV menus themselves are slow, note that too. If only one service has a slow app or videos are buffering there, begin with that app. If multiple apps are affected, investigate the network and Fire TV more broadly. This distinction helps narrow the search; it does not prove the cause.
Check the Fire TV Network Status
- On the Fire TV Stick, open Settings > Network.
- Select Network Status and review the connection information and any on-screen recommendations.
- If your model offers it, select Run Speed Test or open Advanced network details. These options are not available on every compatible device.
Amazon Customer Service describes the tool this way: “The Network Status tool helps you identify and troubleshoot network connectivity issues on your Fire TV device.” It can help distinguish a connection problem between the Fire TV and router from one between the router and internet. Restart the Fire TV Stick, modem, and router
A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary connection or device problem. Amazon’s setup troubleshooting guidance recommends unplugging the Fire TV power adapter for one minute before plugging it back in. For the network equipment, unplug the modem and router for one minute; reconnect the modem first, wait for it to reconnect to the internet, then reconnect the router. The exact indicators and wait time for an internet connection can vary by equipment.

Improve the connection between the Stick and router
If Network Status or the pattern across apps points to a network problem, try moving the Fire TV device and router closer together where practical. Amazon also lists Ethernet as an option. Ethernet support and adapter needs depend on the exact Fire TV model: some devices require an adapter, so check the model’s specifications before buying one. A wired connection may address Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix an app outage or every other cause of buffering.

Fix a slow app or an app that is not working
If one app is the exception while other apps play normally, focus on that app before changing the whole network. Amazon says clearing app data and cache can help with intermittent app problems or low-storage messages. Clearing data may remove app-specific settings or locally stored information, so use it deliberately.

- Open Settings and look for Applications or Manage Installed Applications; wording varies by Fire OS version.
- Select the affected app and choose Clear cache. If the issue continues, consider Clear data, understanding that app data may be removed.
- Check for a Fire TV software update using the update option available in Settings for your version of Fire OS.
- Open the app again and compare its performance with another streaming app.
