Nordstrom is the full-line retailer; Nordstrom Rack is Nordstrom, Inc.’s off-price division. Rack carries some merchandise from Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com, along with goods purchased specifically for Rack. The stores are connected, but their assortments, shopping formats, prices, and return eligibility are not identical.
How Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack differ
| Factor | Nordstrom | Nordstrom Rack |
|---|---|---|
| Retail format | Full-line retailer | Off-price division with a more self-service store experience, according to Nordstrom’s Rack FAQ. |
| Merchandise | Full-line assortment available through its stores and website. | A changing mix that includes merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com, plus goods specially purchased for Rack, according to Nordstrom’s fact sheet. |
| Discount claims | No general discount figure established in the cited materials. | Nordstrom’s 2026 FAQ says most Rack merchandise is 30–70% off; its 2026 fact sheet says savings can be up to 70% off regular prices. These are retailer claims, not guaranteed savings on each item. |
| Services | Nordstrom lists shipping, pickup, returns and exchanges, alterations, and styling services on its customer-service page. | Services and return eligibility depend on the specific purchase and location; check current terms before buying. |
Does Nordstrom Rack sell the same brands as Nordstrom?
There is substantial brand overlap, but that does not mean the two retailers carry the same products. Nordstrom reported in a 2024 brand identity announcement that 90% of Nordstrom’s top brands are sold at Rack. That is a company-reported figure about brands—not a measure of identical styles, sizes, colors, or availability.

Rack’s mix varies by store and changes as new deliveries arrive. Nordstrom says the merchandise mix is tailored to local communities. A brand you recognize may be available at Rack in a different style or season, or not be in stock at the location you visit.
Are Nordstrom Rack prices always lower?
Nordstrom describes Rack merchandise as discounted, but the stated range is not a promise that every item will be cheaper than a comparable item at Nordstrom. The FAQ’s 30–70% figure refers to most Rack merchandise; the fact sheet’s “up to 70%” describes a maximum. Neither establishes the price difference for a particular item at a particular time.

- Choose Nordstrom as your starting point if you want full-line selection, a particular item, or services such as alterations or styling. Check the current listing and availability rather than assuming a store has it.
- Browse Nordstrom Rack if you are open to a changing assortment and want to look for off-price deals. Check the current item, price, and return eligibility; the retailer’s discount claims do not guarantee a particular product or saving.
Nordstrom Rack is not simply a clearance section of Nordstrom: it is a related off-price retailer with both transferred merchandise and goods bought specifically for Rack. The right choice depends on what you want to buy and the terms attached to that item.
