A suppressor reduces muzzle blast, while a muzzle brake redirects propellant gas to manage recoil or muzzle rise. Neither makes shooting hearing-safe by default: keep suitable hearing protection on for either setup. The better choice depends on the firearm and ammunition, the shooting location, nearby people, and which tradeoff matters most.

How do a suppressor and a muzzle brake differ?

Factor Suppressor Muzzle brake
Primary purpose Reduces muzzle blast noise at its source. It does not eliminate all firearm noise or hearing risk. Redirects propellant gas to reduce recoil and/or muzzle rise. Results vary with the device and setup.
Noise and blast Measured reduction depends on firearm, ammunition, and measurement conditions; it is not a universal result. Brake use is a factor in firearm noise-risk assessment, but the cited sources do not establish a universal head-to-head loudness figure.
Recoil and muzzle control The sources reviewed do not quantify its recoil performance against brakes, so there is no supported universal ranking. Designed for recoil and/or muzzle-rise management; no universal performance figure is established here.
Hearing protection Still needed for target shooting or hunting. Still needed; also consider the exposure of people nearby.

These devices solve different primary problems. A suppressor can reduce one component of firearm noise, while a brake is intended to influence how the firearm moves. Choosing between them is not a simple comparison of one decibel number against one recoil claim.

Is a suppressor quieter than a muzzle brake?

A suppressor is intended to reduce muzzle blast; a muzzle brake is not a noise-reduction device. However, the available sources do not provide a universal, directly comparable test of suppressors and brakes across the same firearms, ammunition, and conditions. A specific decibel advantage should not be assumed without a matched test for the setup in question.

A NIOSH-indexed 2018 study reported sound-power reductions of 2–23 dB for the suppressors and conditions it tested. That range is a measured study result, not a prediction for every firearm, suppressor, or shooting environment. The study reported larger reductions with low-velocity ammunition than with high-velocity ammunition, in part because a supersonic bullet produces an N-wave. The figures are not a head-to-head comparison with muzzle brakes. Read the study abstract.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery’s 2024 resource cites referenced studies describing suppressors as reducing sound by up to 30 dB. “Up to” is not a guaranteed result for an individual setup. See the Academy’s resource.

Does a muzzle brake reduce recoil more?

A muzzle brake is designed to redirect gas to reduce recoil and/or muzzle rise. The amount of change depends on the brake design and the firearm setup. The available evidence here does not quantify brake performance against suppressor performance, so it cannot support a general claim that one device always controls recoil better.

If recoil or muzzle movement is the main concern, compare information for the exact firearm and device combination rather than relying on a broad category-level ranking. Also weigh the resulting noise exposure, shooting environment, and effect on people nearby.

Do you still need ear protection with a suppressor?

Yes. Suppressors reduce muzzle blast but do not remove every source of firearm noise or eliminate hearing risk. NIOSH’s 2018 study concludes: “Firearm users should always wear hearing protection whenever target shooting or hunting.” The study abstract is available from PubMed.

NIOSH identifies impulsive noise as more likely to cause noise-induced hearing loss than continuous noise with equal energy. Exposure depends on context, including the number of shots, distance, environment, ammunition, device use, and hearing-protector fit and use. An occupational exposure limit should not be mistaken for a safe threshold for firearm impulses.

For hearing protection, compare fit, comfort, and appropriate protection, and use it consistently. NIOSH notes that a package’s noise reduction rating (NRR) may not reflect the protection an individual actually receives; fit testing is the best way to check protection where available. Its 85 dBA recommended exposure limit is occupational guidance, not a firearm impulse-noise threshold. See NIOSH guidance on providing hearing protection.

What should guide the choice?

  • Noise exposure: A suppressor reduces muzzle blast, but neither device removes the need to protect hearing.
  • Recoil or muzzle rise: A brake is designed to manage one or both; performance depends on its design and the firearm.
  • Firearm and ammunition: Noise measurements can change with ammunition velocity and the specific setup.
  • Location and nearby people: Consider the shooting environment, shot count, distance, and exposure of others.
  • Hearing-protector fit and use: Choose protection that fits and can be worn consistently; a label alone does not establish an individual’s actual protection.
  • Compatibility and local rules: Confirm that the device fits the firearm and check current requirements with the relevant official authority for your location. Rules vary by jurisdiction.

Why one noise figure cannot settle the decision

Firearm sound results depend on what was measured, where and how it was measured, and the firearm and ammunition used. Sound-power reductions from a study cannot be read as a guaranteed reduction at a shooter’s ear or compared directly with a brake result that was not measured under the same conditions. The number of shots and the surroundings also affect exposure.

NIOSH’s recreational-firearm guidance treats suppressor use, muzzle-brake use, ammunition, distance, shooting environment, shot count, and hearing-protector fit and use as relevant considerations. Read the NIOSH guidance. For those reasons, a single decibel figure is not enough to decide between these devices or determine whether hearing protection is needed.
