PS5 game saves and installed games are separate: use PlayStation Plus cloud storage to sync or restore PS5 saves, and use Game Library to download an owned game again. For a broader console backup, use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive—but restoring that backup erases the data currently on the console.

Choose the right kind of backup

A game reinstall puts the game and application files back on the console; it does not, by itself, restore your progress. Sony’s documented PS5 save workflow uses PlayStation Plus cloud storage. A full USB console backup is a separate option that can include saved data along with other console data.

What you want to protect or restore Use this method Important distinction
PS5 game saves PlayStation Plus cloud storage Automatic sync or manual upload/download; Sony’s PS5 save workflow is cloud-based.
PS4 game saves PlayStation Plus cloud storage or copy to an ordinary FAT or exFAT USB drive The USB save-copy procedure applies to PS4 saves, not PS5 saves.
Broader console data Full PS5 backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive Restoring it erases data currently saved on the console.
Owned game or application files Download again from Game Library Reinstalling files is separate from restoring a save.

Back up or restore PS5 saves with PlayStation Plus

Sony says PlayStation Plus members can use cloud storage for saved data. For PS5 games, automatic sync can upload or sync saves when you close a game or the console enters Rest Mode. The console needs internet connectivity in Rest Mode and automatic updates configured.

Copy PS4 saves to an ordinary USB drive

Sony documents a USB-copy option for PS4 saved data on PS5. Use a regular FAT- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, not a drive formatted as USB extended storage for games. This procedure does not apply to PS5 saves.

  1. Connect the ordinary USB drive to the PS5.
  2. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive.
  3. Select a game and the save files to copy, then choose Copy.

To copy PS4 saves back, use the corresponding Copy or Delete from USB Drive option in the PS4 saved-data settings. Sony’s storage guide explains the distinction between PS4 save copies and other storage types: How to manage PS5 console storage space.

Back up the whole PS5 console to USB

A full console backup can include saved data, games and apps, screenshots and video clips, and settings, including user data saved on the console. It does not include trophies or games and apps stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create the backup

  1. Use a USB storage drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and connect it to the console. Sony warns that not all USB drives work.
  2. Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  3. Select the data categories to back up and choose Next, then Back Up.
  4. Wait for the completion message. Do not power off the console during backup; interruption can cause data loss, corruption, or damage.

A USB extended-storage drive used for game data is formatted differently and cannot be used for this full-console backup. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played.

Restore a full backup

Warning: restoring a full backup erases data currently saved on the PS5, and that erased data cannot be recovered. Before proceeding, update the console’s system software if needed so its version is the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was made.

  3. Choose the backup and data to restore, then confirm Restore.

The backup is linked to the PlayStation account associated with it. To restore it to another console, use that same account. Restoration disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; re-enable it afterward if you want to use those features. See Sony’s PS5 backup and restore instructions for the complete procedure.

Reinstall an owned game from Game Library

Deleting a game or application from console storage does not remove access to a purchase. Sony says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from Game Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Game Library on the PS5.
  2. Find the owned game or application you want to install again.
  3. Select it and choose the download option.
  4. After installation, restore or sync its save separately using the PS5 or PS4 saved-data controls described above.

If a PS5 game is on USB extended storage, move it to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play it; extended storage is not a playable location for PS5 games. Reinstalling from Game Library restores game files, not saved progress.

Do not confuse a game reinstall with reinstalling PS5 system software

In Safe Mode, Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a console recovery operation: it deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software. It is not the way to reinstall a game from Game Library. Back up data before using any recovery option that can erase it. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes these recovery options.
