A plasma antenna uses ionized gas as its electrically responsive element. In a transmitting design, an RF feed drives an oscillating current in the plasma, which radiates radio waves. In reception, an incoming radio wave can induce a current in a suitable plasma element, and a feed carries that signal to a receiver. The general receiving principle is established for plasma-antenna designs, but a 2026 laser-filament demonstration showed transmission only—not reception by that specific filament.
How ionized gas becomes an antenna element
A neutral gas becomes plasma when energy frees some of its electrons from atoms. The resulting mobile electrons let the gas conduct electricity and respond to radio-frequency (RF) electric fields. Plasma is not automatically equivalent to an ideal metal conductor: its conductivity is finite and depends on factors including electron density, frequency, and how the discharge is sustained.
In a driven plasma-column antenna, an RF source couples energy into the column. The resulting time-varying current and surface-wave behavior along the plasma produce an electromagnetic field that travels away from the antenna. This is analogous to radiation from current in a metal antenna, although the plasma’s electrical properties affect how well it carries current and radiates.
How plasma antennas transmit
For transmission, a feed supplies an RF signal to the plasma element. The signal makes charges oscillate; their changing current and charge distribution radiate radio waves. Resonance depends partly on the element’s length relative to the wavelength, as well as on plasma properties.

A 2022 U.S. Naval Research Laboratory prototype report described length-related frequency resonances and changes in radiation directionality as plasma density changed. Its near-field measurements covered 5–400 MHz; that is a range measured for a particular laboratory prototype, not a general operating range for plasma antennas. NRL authors’ 2022 meeting abstract.
How the plasma is created and fed
Different designs create and couple to plasma differently. In the laser-induced filament design reported by North Carolina State University in 2026, a laser ionizes a thin shaft of air. An RF generator drives a metal ring around the filament; the ring acts as a capacitor and couples the signal into the plasma without touching it. The report says direct metallic contact would distort the filament. NC State’s account of the laser-filament antenna.
Other experiments use gas-filled dielectric tubes and electrical discharges to sustain plasma columns. For example, a 2023 multi-polarized array study used neon or argon tubes with a small amount of mercury, 40.68 MHz power supplies, and separate signal feeds and regulating circuits. Those are details of that experimental arrangement, not a universal construction recipe. 2023 multi-polarized array study.

What a reported 30 MHz result means
NC State’s 2026 account describes a laser-induced plasma filament transmitting at 30 MHz, categorized in the paper abstract as HF–VHF. In the reported setup, the received signal strength was 2.5 times the laser-blocked, feed-only baseline. The filament and receiver were linearly polarized in the same orientation, about 5 cm apart in an unobstructed near field. This is evidence of transmission in that setup; it does not establish long-range performance or show that the plasma filament itself can receive. NC State’s experimental account.
How plasma antennas receive
An incoming electromagnetic wave can make charges in a plasma element move, inducing a current. A feed connected or coupled to the element can carry that signal to a receiver, just as a conventional antenna feed extracts a signal from a metal element. Plasma-column and discharge-tube studies describe designs that can transmit and receive under suitable conditions.
That general principle should not be confused with demonstrated performance by every design. NC State’s 2026 report explicitly says its laser-filament transmitter had not been shown receiving radio signals. Corresponding author Prya Darshni said, “And while we have not demonstrated its ability to serve as an antenna that can receive radio signals, there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t also work as a receiver.” That is an expectation about the design, not a reported receiving test. NC State, October 5, 2026.

What can be tuned—and what that changes
Changing the plasma and antenna configuration can alter resonance, impedance, radiation pattern, gain, bandwidth, and polarization. The exact effect depends on the design and operating conditions.
- Plasma density and discharge power: These affect the plasma’s electrical properties and can change radiation behavior. The 2022 NRL prototype reported density-related changes in directionality.
- Element length and arrangement: Length influences resonance; array configuration and relative phase can shape radiation and polarization. The 2023 array study describes control of element length and polarization through discharge conditions and regulating circuits.
- Laser parameters and filament direction: In the NC State concept, laser settings can change filament characteristics, including length, while steering the laser changes the filament’s angle. Broad-frequency scanning and beam steering are potential benefits described by the report, not established field-proven capabilities.
A separate 1996 proof-of-principle experiment generated tunable microwave pulses by converting a static electric field in a laser-ionized, gas-filled capacitor array. Its reported 6–21 GHz pulses were generated by a distinct plasma-based radiation scheme, not by driving a plasma column as an antenna element. 1996 capacitor-array experiment.

A plasma antenna needs equipment to create or sustain the plasma, a way to couple RF energy into it, and controls appropriate to the design. A laser-filament system additionally needs a suitable laser and capacitive coupling arrangement. Plasma’s finite conductivity and nonuniform density can affect efficiency and radiation patterns.

In the 2023 multi-polarized array study, the authors identify low gain as a limitation of traditional single-ended plasma antennas when their vibrators are short. Their array approach also required multiple MHz excitation sources; gain depended on discharge power, and performance diverged from the comparison metal antenna at higher frequencies. These findings describe that study’s configurations rather than universal limits. 2023 array study.
Fast reconfiguration, beam steering, and reducing the conducting plasma contribution when a plasma element is off are design advantages being explored. Turning off the plasma does not remove the rest of the system: the source, tube or other structure, feed, and controls remain. Available studies do not establish that plasma antennas are generally smaller, more efficient, or better than metal antennas.
To compare two designs—or a plasma design with a metal antenna—align the conditions before drawing conclusions. Check the operating frequency and bandwidth, plasma source and power requirements, feed and coupling arrangement, measured efficiency and noise, reconfiguration range, radiation pattern and gain, and whether reception was actually demonstrated. For a metal-antenna comparison, also match geometry, frequency, feed, measurement conditions, and transmitter-to-receiver distance.
